iam trying hard to break the news about SA to somebody and go see a pschyiatrist, but my question is for you people who are already getting treatment.. what exactly happens once you see a pschyiatrist. I heard about CBT, but thats basically it... What should I expect?

I tried psychiatry for a long time and psychotherapy only a once. If you see a psychiatrist, they likely will prescribe drugs. I saw many psychiatrists b/c I kept changing jobs and my insurance therefore changed. Most of them only spent 15-30 min in the initial intake before writing a prescription. I had a good one that spent more than an hour trying to figure me out before he prescribed meds. They all (psychiatrists) prescribed antidepressants, which personally didn't really help me. Some prescribed mild anti-anxiety meds, which helped a little.

The only psychologist I saw wanted me to present my everyday problems to her, which she would then try to help me problem solve. I wasn't expecting this, so i wasn't prepared and was a little surprised. I thought therapy would be more about abstract general things. She did give me some very good advice about handling specific situations, but I stopped after a couple of sessions b/c I didn't feel like we were clicking. Then my insurance lapsed b/c I quit another job.

Looking back, I wished I'd have stressed more the anxiety than the depression with the psychiatrists. The funny thing is having SP made it hard for me to communicate with them what my probs were. If I had, maybe they would've prescribed something more for SAD. I think they were focused more on depression.

With the talk therapy, I would've kept trying different therapists til I found a good one. Doctors are like houses and cars, you have to shop around.
