Re: Advice regarding career

Hi

I've had an opportunity to train and become a part time counsellor. Do you think it's ok for people with social anxiety to do this as a job? I think I will start as a volunteer.

Do you think that it is ok for extroverts to be therapists for us?

Or have you defined yourself around your social anxiety disorder?

The only question to ask is: "Can I be good at this?"

And for a part-time, volunteer position my advice is, you cannot really be fired, but teaching others to help themselves will teach you a lot.

When can I have a booking?

If you think you can handle talking to people about issues that might be emotionally trying, yes.

Are there any other careers that I could pursue on a part time basis that are similar to counselling? I'm not sure I would be suited to this but I used to work in admin and I didn't think the environment suited me unless I worked on my own. I've been out of work a while and I can't seem to choose a suitable career.

yes, absolutely!

would you rather be counseled by some n00b who only has advice based on reading some textbook (looking in from the outside)? or would you like to be counseled by someone who has walked through the fire and lived to tell?

you will be offering an authentic sense of validation by bringing your own life experiences to the table. this will be wonderful for both you and the client. congratulations!! :applause:

I know of atleast one person who is a social phobe who has made a career out of being a counsellor..the guy can't even look a person in the eye but according to friends he is quite a well regarded professional counsellor.

Shouldn't someone have recovered before they can help someone else even though they can empathise with them? I'm not sure what type of people I would be asked to help. I'm not sure if this would suit me and I'm anxious about trying it.

You can take the volunteer position to test it out and gain some experience. You don't have to commit to training up to professional.

your anxieties about the job are normal. those are all questions everyone wonders about before stepping up. you'll do well! hang in there! the worst thing that can happen is that it isn't a good match for you. that would be ok, too, but wouldn't you rather say you gave it your hardest? lots of people would love to have that opportunity. go for it!

I think that would be great, you speak from experience when it comes to anxiety, and that would help with counselling those suffering from those conditions.

Good luck.

How exciting for you!! This is a wonderful opportunity! I think people with SA would make great counselors as long as they don't internalize the problems of their patients.
Definitely give the volunteering opportunity a try:)

Congratulations on the offer!! It could be a most fulfilling career choice for you.
