This thread is in general, about the pros/cons of having a http://www.socialphobiaworld.com/post-your-picture-thread-4089/page-1358/ (or similar) thread.

This is (hopefully) where all future "debating" wiill go now, rather than the http://www.socialphobiaworld.com/post-your-picture-thread-4089/page-1358/ thread itself (which is meant for pictures mainly).

There is also the benefit of having a poll

The below (down to about page 3) were the posts moved from the "Post your picture thread" (page 1358 onwards)

Does anyone have a vague niggling feeling that this thread is encouraging shallow, judgemental thinking? (you know, such as what society has been doing for eternity).

'Oh, you have pretty eyes', 'You're cute!', 'Your hair looks good', ... to me all that smacks of it.

You can't tell me that this is good for for self-esteem, to feel the need to post one picture, so as to gain some kind of semi-condiitional "acceptance", based on what the person LOOKS like, as opposed to their REAL self...

Shallow judgement..i dont think any one is judgeing someone when they are saying" you have pretty eyes".
Its a compliment.

Yes there is some sort of effort to gain acceptance..some people want to know the opinions of others and so they post their pics.

Thats natural urge.. dont see anything wrong.
Like every coin has two sides; if one makes the thread as a source of constant reassurance then it is something to think about.
I do feel this do leads ppl to worry abt their looks when one sees someones pic and compares themselves.

I absolutely disagree with you. Furthermore I think its insensitive of you to post your thoughts on this thread. The thread is about putting a name to a face and also its good for building peoples confidence and offering a secure and supportive environment for people to introduce their faces for those who feel brave enough to do so.

I think I see your point. It may depend on the person. I'm glad to read so many positive comments. However not one person commented on my pic good or bad.

The post your picture thread is an accurate gauge of your physical attractiveness.

Based on the number of responses you get.... of course it aint entirely scientific, but sometimes natural observance is an accurate indicator of what is.

Sometimes people fall through the cracks occasionally and don't get noticed. Sorry.
- you look good though. I searched too. You seem the type I would by a beer for.

I can understand how I fell through the cracks here. I was new when I posted, and I had to remind a moderator that this post needed to be approved. But when I commented the way I did, I actually meant it in a broader sense. Not just online but I always feel like I am falling through the cracks. When it comes to my appearance it causes me the feelings of ugliness.

Absolute nonsense. And people tend to comment more on the photos of those members they already know, which makes sense because its a social anxiety forum and people may worry that they are speaking out of turn by commenting on a photo of somebody new/unknown to them. There's a lot of times were pictures just get missed too for whatever reason.

I dont believe that. A picture of a pretty girl (usually - but I have seen really hot guys too) that gets 5 pages worth of responses isn't saying something? and a person who is well...lets say 'average' if we want to sugar coat it, gets completely ignored... I have seen that happen before.... whether or not a person is well known.... if someone looks good... I mean obviously REALLY good - even if no one knows them, they are still going to get more attention.
But lets just agree to disagree.

So, the people who have posted on here and haven't gotten any response, are ugly? People have just said that they've missed people's pictures and didn't see them and that's why certain people didn't get many responses.

^That discussion might be better in a thread of its own. The comments in this one will likely get deleted as off-topic.

No, I am not saying that they are ugly, I am saying that more obviously attractive people get noticed more - and that other people get left out. It's an indicator of peoples attitude towards outward appearance.
I really don't believe people "miss" pictures - unless of course the poster takes them down. This thread is checked all the time - it's incredibly popular, and it is a sticky and in the main sidebar of the forum. How can you miss pictures? You're kidding yourself if you truly believe that.

Anyway, I think we have well established where I stand in respect to that. Back to the pictures.

I completely disagree and I think it's absolute nonsense, totally insensitive and I think it should all get wiped off this thread.

You are saying that the not so attractive (ugly) people didn't get noticed because they're ugly/unattractive not because people just happened to miss their picture.

Anyway, i'm not going to argue, i just think it was really stupid of you to say what you did because the people who's pictures didn't get commented on are going to now think it's because they're not attractive enough.

Well, you try telling that to I am sure the many dozens of pictures that have been ignored completely.

I am not trying to be insensitive or insulting - but perhaps when people are honest with themselves it makes us all feel a little uncomfortable because we don't like what we see within us. I am not being mean. I am being realistic.

But wipe it all if I am out of line or if its off topic.

Its all good.

I think it's totally out of line and cruel. People on here have enough self confidence issues as it is. No wonder people (me included) are scared of posting their picture.

No, seriously. You guys clearly want to discuss this, in spite of how people keep saying the discussion is over.

Just make a new thread already, so other people can join and the conversation everyone obviously wants to have won't disappear soon as a mod logs on.

I am only out of line by throwing the thread off into a debate - rather than what the thread is actually about. No doubt this will all get deleted anyway, which it probably should. I am not the type to sugar coat something if that is the way it is - Don't interpret what I am saying as being spiteful or having a cruel nature. Sorry that I offended you both by implicitly suggesting that appearance actually counts for something. Anyway I can tell that I am causing distress, so I will back off.
