Do you feel more comfortable talking to someone of your own gender or those of the opposite and why?

I don't know why but this is how the following rank for me

attractive girls are the hardest to talk to
girls I don't find unattractive are a little bit easier
girls I do find unattractive and all guys are easiest to talk to

and worst of all is talking to decent or good looking girls when there's other guys around

About the same I think. If someone opens up to me I usually open up back to them no matter their gender.

I agree that attractive girls are the toughest. Strangely enough, I find talking to girls that I'm not attracted to easier than talking to other guys.

I am more comfortable talking to other females.
That is only because I have not had much experience with talking to males.
No father or brother or male friends growing up. Only had one ex, and all conversations with him were only possible if we were only talking about him.

I would love to not feel uncomfortable talking with males! But I would have to gain more knowledge about them in general for this to be possible.:)

I'd say for me from easiest to hardest like you've done there nothingtofear:

For some reason I seem to most enjoy chatting to women my age or older as friends, like yourself megalon. As soon as they're available and/or I feel interested in them romantically, I cr@p my pants

Men older than me - easy as I don't think they're judging me about my fashion sense, street cred. etc.

Men my own age or younger - peer pressure scares me a lot, especially if they're well dressed or confident or trendy.

Women I fancy or - especially - good looking, well dressed, trendy young women - They scare the utter bejeezus out of me.

I don't feel comfortable talking to either sex.
People are people in my eyes-- whether they have girl parts or boy parts or both. And all three make me nervous, to be honest.
haha

I think it matters very much, but I'm not talking about specifically what part they have. They can be trans, it doesn't matter, but the differences between the sexes, at least socially, are extraordinarily different. I will give that a guy talking to girls and a girl talking to guys, it's probably very similar, hence why I ask the question

Well, what I meant is that I don't trust people in general-- thus, I feel equally uncomfortable no matter who I am around.
It wouldn't matter if the person is a middle aged woman or a teenage boy- or anything else; I am not 'comfortable' talking with anyone.
I can talk--- doesn't mean I am comfortable with it though.
Verbal communication is a big part of being a human being, and it's something we need from time to time to retain sanity; but I'm just not comfortable in any situation.

@MagicPotion

Guys around my age & younger are sometimes detrimental to my self esteem in the moment too but they're easier for me to be around since I'm not as concerned with what they think of me. I didn't think about age but now that you mention it, older men are far easier to be around.... so I'd add that to the bottom of my list. Older women I'm not even that sure about. In public I'm as not as uncomfortable around them as most younger people my age (both sexes) I suppose but the only older women I really know and socialize with are my friends moms who I'm pretty comfortable with so I don't have much to compare.

i seem to be more comfortable around women

when men get together, some sort of competition usually arises

I lump them in the category of "other people." If it's not about an assignment or with the distraction of one, I'm too scared to say a word. Gender be damned, I can't speak to anyone.

I feel really shy and awkward around guys, mostly because I grew up without a father-figure to teach me how to interact with men and also because of my past experiences with them so when it comes to approaching guys, I fail miserably...

Like you say, I think some of it must be how we think we're going to be seen by these people.

I feel most awkward around attractive, young, stylish, outgoing people - they must be more likely to judge me for being older and uglier and unfashionable and too shy and polite. It's probably wrong, but deep down that's what's going through my head.

Weirdly, I feel more comfortable around women (now I actually speak to women, lol) as I seem to find more to talk about with them. At the same time, my only 2 friends are men. So, um...

I'd say I feel more comfortable talking with guys. Of course both genders make me anxious (Especially if they're good looking and/or intimidate me), but I've always found it a little easier to get along with guys rather than girls.

Opposite.

I find I have very little in common with most guys, especially as I have zero interest in football, which seems to be an obsession with most men here. Also, as Coyote says, groups of men tend to be quite competitive, and I've no time for that BS either.

Absolutely more uncomfortable talking with women. If is a about a non-personal, non-social matter (like talking to a cashier, for example), I can handle it. But if is about starting a conversation out of a personal, social or romantic matter, is simple impossible for me. Why? I don't know and I don't think it matters at the end of the day, all I know is that this fear is beyond every rational argument I've ever thought off to overcome it.
