Opaline's Food Diary

Okay, I know this seems rather... self-important of me, but let me explain. I've been trying to eat better for a long time now. I go through periods where I do really well, and then periods where I eat poorly. When I get depressed for a long time, I tend to eat poorly. If I am publicly accountable in some way, maybe it will be easier to stick to my healthy eating plan.

Feel free to comment :)

So today so far I've had...

- about a serving of unsweetened applesauce
- 2 hard-boiled eggs (whites only, I hate the yolks)
- 10 raw almonds (in the shell ;))
- some water

I should probably just report back at the end of the day, instead of coming here multiple times and posting throughout the day. Seems to make more sense.

There may be chocolate chip cookies in the oven later on, so I will allow myself one (MAYBE two) of those :D

I keep a food diary of everything that I've eaten, and I also record any exercise I do, and I have my therapist critique it. I've found that to be quite helpful for me, so hopefully this one will help you.

Are you going to weigh yourself?

Imma creepin', beware of my critique! Raaaaawr!
Nah, but yeah, I think this could be a good idea. Public observation may be a good push. Just remember that if you mess up, we aren't critiquing you or anything, just cheering you on! Sometimes I'll start a public one of these, and then abandon it if I eat badly, then I feel bad for abandoning it, and I eat worse for comfort. Lol. So basically yeah, you probably don't work like that, but the point isss.... I am cheering you on!

do you have any specific goals? Like are you looking to lose weight, or just stop overeating for overeatings sake, or to feel healthier, reduce anxiety, or ?

Actually I use Livestrong.com's MyPlate feature, but I don't know anyone else who uses the site, so I figured this would be easier. I still sometimes use MyPlate, though.

Haha, thanks ::p: I'm sure no one would judge you for eating badly, we all slip up. It's tough. Just the fact that you're writing it down and keeping track is a positive thing anyway. It helps monitor food patterns over time, so you'll see that even if you have some "bad" days, maybe overall you're still doing better than you thought :) I like reading people's food journals online, they're really interesting to me.

My main goal is to get into good eating habits that will last me the rest of my life. Along the way I would like to tone up a bit more, and I suppose that would involve losing a little bit of weight. I'm in the normal range of weight for my height, but I have a little extra flab here and there that I'd like to get rid of.

If I had a scale I would use it to (non-obsessively) weigh myself, but I don't own one right now.

I just want to feel better overall by improving my nutrition levels, improving my appearance, and the way I feel on the inside too, physically and mentally.

I didn't do as well as I'd planned, but on the other hand, we really don't have much food in the house. I could have taken it easy with the cookies, though, haha. I ate them while under the influence of something... and that's all I'm going to say. That's my excuse :p

So today I had:

- about a serving of unsweetened applesauce
- 2 hard-boiled eggs (whites only, I hate the yolks)
- 10 raw almonds (in the shell ;))
- some water
- ~1 cup cooked oatmeal
- 6 (yes, 6 ::eek::) homemade chocolate chip cookies
- grilled cheese w/ one slice American cheese, white bread
- ~1 cup 2% milk

Aiming to do better tomorrow!

May I offer a little advice, to help?

If you're not trying specifically to lose weight, but to improve eating habits, then you're calorie intake is a little on the low side... I estimate that it's a little less than 1,100 for the day even with all those cookies... Which is a strict weight loss diet total... (It's recommended that nobody drops below 1,200 calories per day unless under medical supervision.)

(I developed an eating disorder, so I am a little obsessive with calories, I'm currently forcing myself to eat more and eat around 1,500 calories - which is still a weight loss diet amount.)

Also there is a distinct lack of fruit and vegetable matter... But, perhaps that's to do with the lack of food in the house which you mentioned?

I wish you luck with improving your eating habits. :)

Here's a program I found a couple days ago, called "CRON-O-Meter". It looks really good. It has all the usual calories/carbs/fats/etc, plus all the specific vitamins and minerals as well!. And has exercise like those other apps. It's the first time i've used a program for my diet. Just installed, am trying it out now...

Of course, input is always welcome! :) That's part of the reason I'm doing it this way. Plus you guys can chastise me when I slip up :p Or just laugh at me :p

As far as the lack of fruits and veggies... yeah, it's because we didn't have much in the house :/ I LOVE fruits and vegetables, so if we had some trust me, I'd have eaten them.

I actually went above my daily caloric goal yesterday. On Livestrong I have my activity level set to "Light" (one step above sedentary) because I'm not getting much physical activity right now, besides walking around the house or to the car, haha. And I have my weight loss goal set to "lose 1 lb per week", which I'm not even really focusing on. So those two factors combined, I have a pretty low calorie goal. I suppose the better thing to do would be to increase my activity level (well... obviously) while just eating better all around, and losing some weight should be a benefit of that.

^ That is very interesting. I don't wish to lose any weight, but I would love to know how many vitamins and minerals I'm getting each day/week, and I really should keep track of it, especially since I can't take any vitamin pills. Thank you for posting! :)

Forgot to mention that it also has apps for iphone/android (sadly i have neither .. boo hoo!). Using one of those devices could be more convenient, if you wear it all the time, as you could enter any food eaten without having to return to pc. And then sync it with pc (or web version) at end of day

Today's summary:

I woke up around 1 pm because I couldn't sleep last night and by the time I fell asleep it was pretty late.

Brunch:

- 1 kiwifruit
- ~1 cup steamed broccoli (mmm)
- 10 raw almonds

Dinner:
- bulkie roll with 3 slices salami, ~0.5 leaf Iceberg lettuce, little bit of olive oil

Other:
- 1 small pkg. Welch's fruit snacks
- 1.5 glasses water

It should also be noted that I have a pretty small appetite to begin with. My mother has always commented on how I "eat like a bird", and this has been the case since I was very little. So no, I'm not starving myself, I just eat small portions of things. Generally, that is. I mean, I can easily go overboard with junk food. It's definitely my weakness.

I had another sandwich much later last night, and I also had more fruit snacks. I don't know if I'm really going to stick with this thread :p I may just use Livestrong, or that other thing I downloaded.

Yesterday I Had:

Breakfast: 8 egg whites, peanut butter sammich, 2 packets of oatmeal.

Lunch: Turkey Chipotle sammich and a small chicken wrap (both low fat)

Pre-workout meal : PB sammich, banana, 1 bowl of chick peas, glass of fat free milk

Post-workout: Mass Gainer shake (1.5 scoops), granola bar, glass of any generic "juice" high in sugar

Dinner: Rice and chicken with some chick peas

Night time meal: 2 glasses fat free milk, handful of cashews

Sigh, that comes out to almost 3500 cals.
