Och aye the noo

You kinda phrased this question a bit oddly. Are you asking if ye can use yer stereo speakers when going for a guitar/laptop setup via guitar amp/effects simulator software?

What i meant is my stereo system has an i/p for "guitar" (& i/p for "microphone"). Also a volume knob for each.

I'm sure i would have forgotten how to read scores, as its been a few years.

Also i have a "thing" with complexity - in that my motivation disappears into dust as soon as i'm confronted with daunting (or even slight) complexity. I only like simple things these days, else my mood drops & i can't be ars'ed with stuff. Could be why i do sweet feck-all in my life, as most things are too much hassle for what its worth.

And i'm scared i'll spend a tonne of money on stuff that i'll barely use. I do that - i buy things, and never use them.

:idontknow:

So, you been listening to Metallica's Garage Inc double album of covers? For me that wus their last album I could listen to from start to finish without wanting to skip a single song, even if their Motörhead covers are cringy as f**k for me. Mainly because Hetfield is trying to sound like Lemmy, vocally. And... :eek:mg: It just doesnae work.
These i listened to on youtube...
Metallica - Garage Inc. [Full Album HD] (2.15 hrs; =double album?)
The Complete Garage Days - Metallica (Full Album)
Metallica-And Justice For All/ Full Album HQAudio

Not sure how I feel about Hardwired album? I mean, it's great, don't get me wrong. A return to form for 'Tallica as far as their sound goes. But, for me, that's the only good thing about it. It's not an album I can see myself revisiting, except for the odd song here and there. In fact, I've found myself listening to Iron Maiden most recent Book of Souls album than Metallica's recent effort. Not because I prefer one over the other, but I don't know... I guess, with Maiden, there's more a journey to their albums since Brave New World. If that makes sense? But then Maiden have never gotten the same level of fan backlash when they veer away from their signature sound, compared to Metallica.
Yeah, i found the album online (amazingly) & listened to it all the way thru. But it didn't feel as good as the garage stuff & And Justice For All; they just had that "something extra" which i cannot really put inta words. The new album seemed kinda repetitive & tedious, or sth. Kinda feels bit like st anger & death magnetic, their newer sound, and james' singing is different also (i suppose i prefer his previous more-schreechy way of singing & thrash style).

Also started playing Ride The Lightning, but didn't like it (the previous album Kill em all i like a lot tho).

Also listened to Metallica - Power Metal (1982 Demo) a couple days ago, & not impressed. So i might not like their demo's.
Collaborations, on the other hand, i like (S&M, Lulu).

Listening to Master Of Puppets album, and liking it :). Tho i do like the sound of puppet songs better on S&M (& james' voice is better imho); 5 years makes a difference!.

Wished ah'd gotten into Metallica back in the 80s, but back then i'd probably never heard them (as not on radio), & might have been aware of them only due to seeing their name tattoed on a few schoolbags? But i wan't inta thrash/etc back then, just mainstream stuff that heard on mainstream radio. That being the times before internet.

Could i start with the most basic setup - ie just a guitar (?) - and over time build on that skeleton system?

And what guitar brand would be best, as a beginner? Can effects equipment make their same sound effects on ANY guitar? See now thats a good question - what sort of sound do i want to produce? Do i need to decide on that BEFORE i buy a guitar??

Awrite, I get where yer coming from now...

No, you wouldn't be able to use yer stereo system. It'd probably be fine if you went the traditional route of guitar, effects pedals, amp. With the stereo speakers acting as an amplifier. But, again, I be a bit unsure of that setup. Unless the speakers in question are subwoofers.

2000sglossblack.jpg

Mind you, it be fine if it's just the guitar without any effects. Since the signal chain when connecting effects pedals together one after the other creates additional hum, beside what would be coming through from the guitar.

Also, the audio interface needs to be connected to yer computer in order for the software to recognise it's there and play the sound through it. Don't recommend running softwsre using yer computer's onboard soundcard. I did that and nearly knackered the speakers on my laptop. As the AmpliTube software emulates an amplifer down to the hum you get when not playing, as well as the popping sound you get when unplugging and turning it off.

Oh, just came in mind of this. You can always buy a USB guitar audio interfaces, like this, if you don't want to buy a rectangular audio interface? As price-wise the guitar interface works out cheaper.

I'm sure i would have forgotten how to read scores, as its been a few years.

Couldn't ya learn how to do that again? Or, if going by the notation is too much to memorize, the tab would be far easier. Has been for me, and ah know sod all about how to musically notation or music theory. Despite 4 and a half years studying music in secondary school.

:idontknow:

I know. Ah cun relate to the whole buy stuff, never using and it feeling like wasted money. But, that aside, ah just want tae see if ah cun gie ye some perspective as far yer issue with complexity goes. Ah know, it can seem daunting but the guitar is quite complex instrument when it comes to learn how to play it. Since there's so much ye cun do as far as chords and techniques go.

But why not look at it like this. Instead of seeing complexity as reason to quit, use it as motivation. That wah ye give yersel' a goal to achieve, and build yer confidence as a guitarist. By the end of this week I have learnt.... in some many weeks time I'll have learnt this song. See what ah mean?

Aye, it'll be hard going at first but persistence and practice are key. That's why every metal and virtuoso guitarist is held in high regard by their fans and peers alike.

And as I said, take it slow. That way ye won't get too overwhelmed. And, with the internet being what it today, there are plenty of guitar related tutorials available on YouTube. As well as DVDs. If taking paid guitar lessons isnae your thing. That said, ah gave up on lessons and taught myself after 2 years, because the guy I being taught by refused to help me progress from rhythm to lead guitar playing.

Could i start with the most basic setup - ie just a guitar (?) - and over time build on that skeleton system?

Aye, ye could, I suppose. Never did it that way myself, like. But I guess buying the guitar and rest of the gear would work... :idontknow:

Assuming yer going the traditional route of guitar, amp, pedalboard and effects?

And what guitar brand would be best, as a beginner?

Depends what yer going for, really. Since the likes of Jackson, Ibanez, Squier and Epiphone now do quality electric guitars at low prices, that are all within a beginner’s price range. Starting from about £90 up to £200 pounds. Don't what the pricing on guitar is like over in New Zealand or Australia.

And a guitar and amp starter kit, here in the UK at least, will set you back £200, and that's including VAT and postage. But these are usually by lesser known brands that naebuddy never heard of.

But looking into it, or if you tell the guy at the music store how much you’ve got to spend and if see if they’ve got any well-known guitar brands with that price limit, I’m sure they’ll help ye find summit. Sorry if I’m no much help as far specific guitar brands for beginners goes. There’s that many and, as I said, most of these brand names now have guitars ideal for beginners who want a well-known brand as their first ever guitar.

Graeme1988

Can effects equipment make their same sound effects on ANY guitar?

Not necessarily. I mean, the effects will be the same on any guitar. But how it sounds to the ear will differ slightly, depending on the guitar and amp the effects are running through. Since, what yer essentially describing here is: Guitar tone. Which comes down to, and is shaped by, the kinda pickups fitting within the guitar and the amps used. Since, to put simply, different guitar pickups and amps will produce a different tone. So, it’s partially the pickups. The other half being how you tweak the knobs on the effects pedals or amp to dial in sound coming through the guitar.

See now thats a good question - what sort of sound do i want to produce? Do i need to decide on that BEFORE i buy a guitar??

That is a good question; and a very important one. Because, if you have some idea of the sound yer going for, then you can go for a certain guitar, with certain type of pickup, or specific effects equipment. So, the same approach applies here as I said about brand name guitars at low prices - do a wee bit o’ research afore you commit to buying anything is an absolute must. Not just on pricing, but the kinda guitar yer favourite bands or musicians use. Since this will also influence the sound yer going for.

Basically this is the approach you need to have in mind, if yer gonnae be working within a budget:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06FPJniL0D8&list=PLQXro2VDjyIxdCSplV_Zk4qQbbZc2qTCU&index=30

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdLHy1w8-FM&index=48&list=PLQXro2VDjyIxdCSplV_Zk4qQbbZc2qTCU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY2vjUZKWlI&index=50&list=PLQXro2VDjyIxdCSplV_Zk4qQbbZc2qTCU

So, as I said – research before committing to a purchase. Plus, there’s always folk doing video reviews of guitars, effects and amps and uploading these to YouTube. So, if you look at an online retailers and any guitar you happen to look at doesn't have a customer review written for it, just search for a review on YouTube.

I might go to a music store tomorrow. I dunno if the man in the shop will be any use to me .. i do think i need to equip myself with more basic knowledge before asking him any questions...

Aye, that true. As long as ya know and have a basic idea of what yer talking and looking for, without getting into too much detail, I’m sure the guy at the music store will be able to help you out. So don’t be so quick in dismissing their usefulness to you. Speaking from my own experience of being a regular customer at my local musically instrument store for over 10 years now, the folk at these places tend to know their shit when it comes to all things guitars. More so if they also do guitar repair work as well.

Anyway, I hope, again, that what I’ve said here is helpful to you, and explains everything as clearly as possible? Since I’m shit when it comes to explaining things or giving sound advice. And ah really hope ye get back intae playing the guitar, mate, because it’ll give ya summit tae do if yer feeling really bored and can’t think of anything to do. Since boredom can be great motivation to be do summit creative. Well, speaking for myself, as someone who gets bored easily.

Another thing is, lead or rhythm? I'm indecisive about that. I suppose i could learn both, and switch between? I know that page did both.

As did Jimi Hendrix and Pantera's "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. Though, Hendrix really just played lead licks for a majority of his songs. Aye, there's a few songs where he not. But for the most part Hendrix either mixed both lead and rhythm, like Page. Even though ye can hardly tell... Or just played lead.

Anyway, my advice would be a mix of both. But learn and get good at rhythm, first. Then, once you're decent enough at that, move to learning how to play lead. As if as getting good at one aspect of guitar playing should give you confidence when it comes to the other.

Wouldnae dive into the lead guitar side of things from the off, though. That's a mistake and too daunting a starting point. As there's a tonnes of musical information to remember. Since lead playing requires knowing the major and minor scales and their Greek variations - if ye want to go that far into the music theory side of it? But ye don't necessarily have to. As you pointed out to me, a few months ago, some musicians have little to no knowledge of theory. Though, you do need to know the basics afore ye tackle guitar solos, especially if you want to improvise a solo.

Also, as far as lead goes... if yer going to be self-taught, you'll probably read somewhere that the A-minor Pentatonic scale is the only yin ye need for solos. Don't believe that. Because all that scale does is limit you on the fretboard, really. Until you learn the notes of the fretboard, and where the all notes that make up the scales are. Then you can play a Pentatonic scales starting on the octave, instead of the root note. Sorry, I'm sound like my old guitar tutor. :giggle:

Not to say ye cannae find a balance by, say, learning both lead and rhythm parts of a Metallica song. The end instrumental riffing on The Day That Never Comes, for example, where James and Kirk both play lead at one point. Or whatever band you can think of that has 2 guitarists?

Graeme1988

Hie yer hence from me heath!
Wishbone Ash had 2 lead guitarists .. i dunno if thay also had a rhythm guitarist or what?

Heard of them, but I'm not overly familiar with their music. A wummin who's quite friendly with my mum, like they know and chat to each other if they see on another while out shopping, she took my mum and oldest sister to see them a few years in Carlisle, when they were touring as support for Uriah Heep. Some daft eejit of a fan kept jumping the crowd barrier and leaping up on the stage throughout the show.

I mean, 2 lead guitarists is alright, since they do a lotta harmonies and flashy stuff. But it can be a more than a wee bit intricate and technical, not that I'm trying to put ye off, like. Learning solos is a great way to challenge yer guitar playing skills, if ye approach with the correct mindset.

Ah wus just thinking bands that have a 2 guitarists playing lead and rhythm, respectively would give ye some variation and/or choice in terms of what yer playing. :idontknow: But it's entirely up to you, man, and which approach ye take. Ah cannae do more than advise ye, really.

Just remember to persist with it, have fun, and take things slowly if ye do end up getting back into the swing of playing the guitar more often. And if yer arms, wrists or fingers start getting sore while playing, take a wee break from it for a while. Don't strain yersel' by playing through the pain, you'll just end up feeling worse for it. Take it fae me who, at one point, practiced for 2 and half hours straight every weekend when I was just starting out learning.

Aye, Garage Inc is a double album. I bought it on back when CDs were a thing? Remember them? Those were the days, man.

Yeah, i found the album online (amazingly) & listened to it all the way thru. But it didn't feel as good as the garage stuff & And Justice For All; they just had that "something extra" which i cannot really put inta words.

Well, if ye want to single out the Justice album, that something extra they had was aggression, for sure. Unlike other album, even St. Anger isn't as intense as that album. And Justice for All just bludgeon yer ears from the off and doesn't let up til last song ends.

And Garage Inc, I think what makes that album that really standout is the fact that, with exception of the Motörhead covers, they're playing those covers if Metallica, themselves, wrote them. So it's still sounds like a Metallica album.

And I think they've kinda struggled since Newstead quit. But he never really got the respect he deserved, since James, Lars and Kirk kinda resented him for taking Cliff's gig. Aye, Jason might not be the best bassist as far as showcasing various techniques, like slap bass, but he could match Hetfield when it came to the live backing vocals, as well as outshine him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swvxe-Cw63Q

The new album seemed kinda repetitive & tedious, or sth. Kinda feels bit like st anger & death magnetic, their newer sound, and james' singing is different also (i suppose i prefer his previous more-schreechy way of singing & thrash style).

Yeah, I felt the same about the new Hardwired album, sounds great it gets a bit too repeative.

Also started playing Ride The Lightning, but didn't like it (the previous album Kill em all i like a lot tho).

Oddly enough, I'm the opposite. I don't know, I think the production and overall sound on Ride the Lightning is better. Kill 'Em All had a kinda demo vibe to me as far as how it sounded.

Also listened to Metallica - Power Metal (1982 Demo) a couple days ago, & not impressed. So i might not like their demo's.

Haven't actually heard any of the earlier demos, except for songs that were eventually put on And Justice for All and the self-titled album. James plays the guitar solo on the demo version of Enter Sandman and doesnae sound all that bad.

Collaborations, on the other hand, i like (S&M, Lulu).

Yeah, I like those album as well. Despite them getting shit upon when they were originally released.

Listening to Master Of Puppets album, and liking it :). Tho i do like the sound of puppet songs better on S&M (& james' voice is better imho); 5 years makes a difference!

Puppets is definitely one of their best. Huv'nae went back and listen to the S&M album in ages. So I've forgot what Master of Puppets sounds like with the orchestra accompaniment

I was the same, man. For me, once my family got Sky digital, and I heard and saw the music video for November Rain by Guns N' Roses, that was it. My taste in music changed completely, forever, from that point.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE

My mum got intae Metallica around the time of the Black Album, had it on cassette tape. But that's how I got into most of the bands I listen to now. Raiding my mother collection of vinyl and tapes. Metallica, G'N'R, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, KISS, Meat Loaf, Rod Stewart, etc. She even has the vinyl of Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction with the original, infamous artwork
bf8e01e5599f8692c6e62dcb7bb5e6c6.jpg

Though, she went and nabbed ma copy of The Black Album on CD off me and put it in with the CD collection she had for her mini-stereo in the kitchen, and wouldnae gie it back. To the point where I had to good to my local record store and buy another copy to keep in ma room. :giggle:

And most CD booklets had thanks lists of other bands that the band I'd been listening to had toured with. So, I wasted my money sensibly... before the tattoos started, anyway. Frequenting my local record stores on weekends, going straight for the rock/metal and vinyl sections. And parting with whatever money I had at time. Usually, as many albums on CD as possible if they were going cheap - or yin on CD and another on vinyl.

Well, what absolute shite week this has been. On Monday, just past there, my cousin phones up to say she's got no sight in her left eye and she off work. Goes to hospital the next day to find out the cause - a burst abscess! She still no got her sight back in that eye properly.

My older sister's had her 2nd child, lost a litre of blood and needed stitches in the process. Didnae opt for a c-section this time. But she said was like just like having a massive shite. Which pretty validating what women have say to men about child-birth for years. The closest men get to experiencing that same level of discomfort is pushing out a huge shite.

She's been stressing our Mum to go over the see the bairn right away, which she can't because she need to pack her blood pressure med, asthma inhalers and so on. Get the ferry over. Mum even got accused of caring more about going to concerts than coming to Ireland. I mean, she does huv a bad knee which limits her mobility, and she's getting older. But lets not factor those in. Or the fact she's put off the knee-replacement surgery.

And it's not like I insist she come to the concerts as well. Unless me saying: "Ye cun come if ye want, but don't feel pressured to go" is being interrupted differently than how I meant it?

Other than that it's the usual with me. Being accused of not caring enough about my family. Y'know, despite cowing to their every demand, least ah git called a selfish b@$%@^"! Being forced to take their side in arguments that have f**k all to do with me. Huh, it really is like the mafia, kinda. Me getting blamed for shit that wus'nae ma fault. Y'know, dyfunctional all round me and feeling a need to escape it. :kickingmyself:

Life's a bitch, then ye marry one.

That's something one of my cousin's used to say a lot, til he got married. And he found out the heart breaking way that his witty spin on the old cliché that, "Life's a bitch, then ye die", was actually more true than the phrase he was parodying.

Been thinking about death the past few days. Just musing, mostly. Wondering who'd miss me. Wondering how much longer ah cun take being burdened with the responsibility of caring for a parent who refuses to change their ways, at the expense of my own mental health. Because it's really taking a toll on me. Not to complain, but..

I'm just tired of always asking for help from my family, and only ever getting it when they see it as a chance to be praised. Something they'll use against me in future arguments, and have done. Because my mum and older sisters don't feel appreciated enough by me. FYI - that's how women act when raised by mentally-ill, uneducated, single mothers who have anger issues due to past relationships. F**k being caring and considerate. "Tell I'm good because I am. Or else...". Egos so f**kin' massive, they're morbidly obese.

But what do I know, I'm probably wrong? As I'm frequently told I am. Despite also being the so-called "clever c*nt" in the family. :idontknow: Aye, being self-reliant is great. But I'm that way to the point of having zero trust in those around me, or anyone in fact. Cannae exactly blame me, like. Though, it'd nice to not have this burden of responsibility constantly weighing me down.

Wish ah hud a more stable upbringing. Should've been adapted.
