New Situations Discomfort

I'm sure many of you can relate to this: I avoid situations which are unfamiliar because I don't know the proper protocol, or am afraid of being ill-prepared. Currently, there are a couple of things I would like to do, but have been trying to get up the nerve. First, I would like to take some sort of exercise class, but I am concerned about joining one that is already in progress, or doing a drop-in, where there could be core group of people who attend, and I would feel like an outsider. This seems even more difficult to me than a class with a start and end date, which, to some degree, could ensure everyone is as about as experienced as everyone else in the class. Second, I would like to go to a spa to have some relaxing treatments, but it is stressing me out just thinking about it. For one thing, I would have to call to make an appointment, and I hate talking on the phone. Also, I worry a lot about details-like I wouldn't want to bring a lot of things in, such as a purse, but I obviously would need to bring money. Have you been able to overcome similar issues? If so, how?
