My name is Liam May and I'm writing a book aimed at the sophisticated layman about the invention of the drug alprazolam (known in the USA by brand name Xanax) and its historical use in treating panic and generalized anxiety disorder. This is not a self-help or "bibliotherapy" book and will not claim to treat or aid in the treatment of these disorders. Nor does the premise have of the book have a presumed perspective about these disorders, their nature, their causes or the drug alprazolam.

I'm looking for three distinct groups of people to via relate via one or interviews relate their personal stories:

Group A - Individuals who have a panic disorder diagnosed by a recognized medical professional who have in any period since diagnosis have taken alprazolam for more than 6 - 8 months -- not necessarily continuously -- and have had good resolution of their symptoms, no severe side effects and no serious withdrawal episode.

Group B - Individuals who have a panic disorder diagnosed by a recognized medical professional who have in any period since diagnosis taken alprazolam in any dosage for any period of time and had a poor outcome of drug treatment. For example, accelerating dose dependency culminating in usage of alprazolam that could be characterized as abuse, failure to resolve symptoms at any dose, a withdrawal episode resulting in a hospitalization for detoxification or other adverse event, such as a suicide attempt.

Group C - Individuals who have either self-diagnosed panic disorder or otherwise have never received a professional diagnosis. Or individuals who indeed do not suffer from panic disorder at all and have used illicit means -- such as street purchase, online pharmacy not requiring prescription or consultation with physician -- or manipulative means -- such as presenting false symptoms to a physician -- in order to gain access to a lawful alprazolam prescription. Group C individuals, without the implication of value judgment, will most likely be considered by others and perhaps themselves as chronic substances abusers or recreational drug users.

Unless specifically requested, interview subjects will not be identified in the book by real names or other specific characteristics that would make recognition of the individual easy. Indeed subjects are invited to respond and carry out the interview in complete anonymity if they so choose. I won't even know your names if you don't want me to have them. I do ask however that all information you relate about your particular cases be entirely truthful and accurate to the best of your recollection.

Interviews and follow-ups will be conducted over a period of several months, so maintaining reasonable accessibility is important. The interviews can be conducted via any reasonable media that is both comfortable and convenient to the subject, or a combination of media may be used.

I look forward to hearing from any of you who would like to add your personal histories to this story of pharmacology and human ailment.

I may be contacted directly at [email protected].
