My internet life hinders me...

I find comfort in looking at sites like these...As well as SAF which I'm currently a part of. However, I feel like they hinder me more than they help. I feel like I'm always on them. I make friends easily here, and talk to them, rather than going out and trying to make real-life friends who I can hang out with. It's nice to be able to talk about problems with SA, but still. I've been thinking of taking a break from these sites for awhile...Maybe not touch them for a month or two. I'll still use the internet, but only on sites that have nothing to do with SA. Have any of you tried this? Or, just stopped using your computer all together for awhile? Did it help?

I took a long break from sites like these..Actually, I do all the time. Sometimes it's just way too much. Just give it a little break, and come back when you feel you'er able to. I couldn't stop using the computer altogether or the Internet, but in your case, just start off with some space away from some sites if it makes you do things better in real life.

to get me off the internet would take physical restraints and tranquilizers. i'm almost not kidding.

Without websites like these, where I can share my experiences and read the experiences of others, where people actually truly understand each other, I would have gone insane long ago.

I think a more healthy way to view it is as a place to fall back on as a fail safe. Everyone needs social support from friends and whatnot, and this is where you find yours. It would be a good idea to hold onto this place until you make some friends in real life, as you can talk to people here who have the same struggle and can sympathize and provide advice and direction. It is okay to use these forums as places for friends, but as you noted, real life friends are much more fun and satisfying to have. So, hang onto this until you are succeeding in real life (which is hard to do and takes time).
