Missing Money

Am living in a rather awkward situation with a group of strangers, I pretty much keep to myself, staying in my room whenever Im not working as home for me is a place where I like to limit stress. I keep my head down and keep to myself, they all think Im pretty weird but hey thats who I am.

Today when I went to put in my fortnightly payment into the kitty (pays for utilities) I found a note saying that $250 is missing. Im now waiting for the inevitable confrontation when people start accusing each other of stealing.

Ive looked through the records and there are no missing bills or payments, someone has simply taken money for their own use.

As the loner and outcast of the flat I know that I will be the first to be blamed and Im having panic attacks just thinking about it. I have my own suspicions regarding who took the money but I have no proof and I fear that Im going to be accused of it.

I honestly dont think I can handle such a confrontation and am wondering if it would just be better for my health to make up for the missing money with my next pay cheque so no more is said about it. What else can I do?

Hello Horatio
This sounds like a really stressful situation.
I hate conflict too....and try to avoid it, so I can see why you would try to do something to keep the peace.
But its quite a lot of money and you didn't take it....so why on earth should you loose out on behalf of some tea leaf.
It's not just your problem...its everyone in the house's too.
If I was in this situation...I think I would wait to see if anyone accused me....and then say that I really hate conflict....and like to keep myself to myself, but that doesn't make me a theif.
In other words....I know its hard, but stick up for yourself.
You might feel all shaky and stressed at the time, but I think you will feel better in the long run, than if you accept responsibility for someone else's sneaky behaviour.
Hope it gets sorted out for you soon

You know what, thats perfect. If they accuse you because you're the quiet one then spout that out^^^

Oak made a good point in that you may appear more suspicious as a result of refunding the money and make it easier for the thief to repeat the offence.

This is a horrible horrible situation especially if it brings any tension into the house. I've experience of living with people who hated me and it was devastating. If anything stand your ground, but try to keep yourself from accusing others or being outwardly rude about it. Be civil - you're working, you don't need the money nor the hassle, its obvious it wasn't you and if they don't believe it I'll be bitch-slapping them all for free. :D

had the big confrontation today

I actually initiated it by going up to several of them and saying I had seen in the logbook that $250 was missing. They knew about it and said they were gonna have a flat meeting about it later on which we did.

By going to them first about it instead of them coming to me hopefully helps take the blame off me.

Besides, money never went missing until the new girl and her unemployed boyfriend who keeps getting kicked out of flats moved in...

end result is we each have to put in $50 to replace the money that was supposed to pay for our next bills

fuck I hate confrontation, if I had a gun today I wouldve killed myself just to avoid that confrontation :? good thing I dont live in America aye, guns are so hard to find here in NZ!

whats with the pun against america? damn people seem to really hate us

no offence intended, just making the point that Im lucky gun control is so tough here in my country compared to countries like America where anyone can get a gun and buy ammunition from the local KMart

if guns were so accesible here then Id be dead already

I don't think he was conveying hate against Americans - he was just saying that it would be easier to come by a gun there compared to New Zealand.
