Meditation?

How do you do it?

Just put on some relaxing music and imagine what?

Can you actually turn your mind off and control a blank mind?

My mind is over active and I would have so many random thoughts of junk. How do you get to that stage of meditation?

I have been told so many times to try meditation. I just look at them puzzled. where do I start?

I use the mantra meditation also. While I have tried some others, it works the best for me. Thank you God for it!!!!

The phrase doesn't matter at all, you can say green eggs and ham if it pleases you. Zazen takes a long time to learn, while I benefited from mantra meditation after only four days.

1. find a good quiet spot where you won't be disturbed or incounter sudden noises.

2. Sit in a comfortable chair, feet flat on floor. Set a clock somewhere that you can see it easily.

3. Close your eyes, after about twenty seconds, start saying the mantra internally to your self (don't say it out loud). Don't force it, let it flow naturally, don't try to exclude other thoughts, they will come, let them come.

4. once you think twenty minutes have passed, open your eyes at check if its been twenty minutes yet.

5. when 20 minutes are up, keep your eyes closed, but stop saying the mantra. relax this way for two more minutes

6. After the two minutes are up (see step 5), slowly open your eyes.

Thats it. It is recommended to do it twice a day, the same times each day, and do the two sections at least six hours apart.

Got questions, ask me.

Bearly, do you meditate when you're feeling down ? Or for anxiety or to prepare for an event ? Cause this is where I'm not sure if meditation is good for depression or anxiety.

I'll try to meditate out of pure curiosity like you said, but instead of that ''toungue twisting'' mantra i'll use some phrases from a self confidence track. Hope it will remain in my subconscient in the end...

Oh, and another thing, how does meditation work ? Is it only a way of distracting attention or is it more ?

Hi renegade,

To answer your questions, meditation using mantas has been around for thousands of years. I do meditation for anxiety, but it can help with depression also. The reason that I tried it, and I'm glad I did, was because I read a book by a Japanese psychiatrist that taught people with anxiety disorders Zazen mediation to calm them down. He discusses how meditation will produce alpha brain waves in experienced meditators. He also mentions that mantra meditation will produce these alpha brain waves. He used an EEG to record the brain waves. Alpha brain waves occur when people are relaxed, and are most prevalent just before you enter sleep, as you start to drift off.

Mantra meditation is much easier to learn and will cause these benefits very quickly, while Zazen meditation is more difficult and it takes a while before you acheive much success.

It is not so much a distraction, it gives the left side of the brain something to do while activating the right side also. Most activities just envolve one lobe of the brain, this involves more. I don't know all the ins and outs, but this form of meditation has been studied the most and it has been shown to reduce stress, reduce stress hormones, and help with depression, anxiety and drug dependance.

I recommend picking a short mantra. Find one you like, and stick with it. Don't keep switching mantras. By the way, let your head hang down, let it all hang out, so to speak. I often fall asleep, and wake up feeling very refreshed. I think of it as 'power napping'. I could go on, but i don't want to bore you. By the way, I spent $500 to learn this method (which i gave you all for free), but i still consider it worth every penny, it really has helped me during some stressful times.

Meditation is something you can't just automatically turn on, though. It's more a go-to mental structure that you have to maintain yourself. It can lead to great serenity when you're good at it. But it requires a bit of practice, just like any other mental exercise.

It's made drastically easier when you keep your mind clear, because then you're not constantly stimulated by (good or bad) exciting emotions.
