hey, if by uni you mean university, there is a therapy group for students with sp, its not a support group tho, its cognitive behavioural therapy.

hey, wait a minute....

do you want to create a support group???

I mean, I've been thinking about posting this for a little while, but concerned because... I don't know, i don't know you guys really and I wondered if we could really relate (and maybe, is it dangerous for me to be meeting with random people off the internet, no offense to anyone personally). but obviously we have showing up here in common, and that's the point, right?

listen, I'm socially phobic but midly so and I'm pushing myself really hard to get through it lately. If you want a group, seriously, i'd be willing to run it. No therapy, just getting together and talking about sp and maybe recounting success stories and failures. Is that the kind of group you're looking for?

I just think that knowing that other people are out there with this problem helps to normalize it to a certain extent. I know just coming to this site and hearing about other people's experience helps me put my own in perspective.

What do you edmontonians think? Would you show up? I'm thinking, coffee shop or the like, not at anyone's home, you know, for safety reasons.

I'd be totally up for that, Ayla...

what if we all just sit there silently staring at the floor- Ha, I'm mostly kidding. It would be nice to be in a group of people who won't detest you if you are just silently staring at the floor though...

A coffee shop would be good, I am pretty functional as a Social Phobe, but I used to have agoraphobia and I understand this might be a huge leap for some people.

thats exactly what I was thinking. I mean, there are so many ways that we can try to go out and be 'joiners' and stuff...but wouldn't it be nice to just go and meet people for once where you know in advance that everyone is going to feel awkward and shy and maybe even just laugh about it? its kind of like having a disclaimer "I might act strangely, but I'm still cool" and everyone already knows that.

I'll just wait a little longer to see if other people reply, and then suggest a date.

alright! so the final date, as agreed upon by all three who responded, is Friday, April 7th, at 2pm at the churchill square second cup.

just posting this in case there are any other edmontonians out there who were too shy to respond before, and so didn't get the info.

see you guys there

See ya there, it'll be a quick visit for me though.

Hopefully more Edmontonians can make it, now or in the future...

Ayla, do you go to the cognitive behavior sessions at the university? Just curious, I don't know much about that.

Social Anxiety Support Group in Edmonton

Nice to hear there are a couple of groups running in the city. I tried to start one myself at the U of A a couple of years back, but couldn't get it off the ground. Will look into these two for sure. If anyone wants to chat, my email is [email protected].
