I'd like it if we were a bit more open

I'm not giving any commands. Just suggestions

I don't think a join date matters at all.
Why don't we put our birthdate on?
How about the place we live?

Hiding things doesn't help at all

We have a real world and I think it's good to face up to it
I'd like to know more about people here

I understand what you're saying.

A lot of people don't want to put too much on here because... well, it IS the Internet.

I wish more people on here were open to videochatting, because I'd love to do that. But, given that this is a social phobia website, the fear of such a thing is a given and I can't blame anyone. I myself would have been afraid to do it about a year ago, but someone online helped me get over that fear and now I find it's not too hard to push myself a little and just do it. It turns out to be a lot of fun.

But anyway, getting off topic here.

I've been on spw (on and off) for quite some time and I know first hand that it's not easy for people to open up on here. The sharing of details like age and location aren't even that important if you ask me - but I do think that we should try to communicate better amongst ourselves because there's a lot of anxiety and avoidance on here (as you might expect) which can make all parties involved feel awkward. Sometimes I have a great dialog going with someone but then suddenly I feel too uncomfortable to continue, and I've also had times where I try to talk to someone and I just get ignored. So it's something we all have to work on, but I suppose it's also the reason we're here, so we do have to cut each other a little slack.

Well, my birthdate and the place I live are both on my public profile and you can ask anything you want (except my real name :D )

and yes, it's understandable that a lot of people don't want to share things like these, but me? In Barcelona (the metropolitan area, not the city) we're like 5 million people and nobody (except 5-7 relatives) know my birthdate, so no, I'm not afraid of being recognized.

There are many threads on here were posters do open up. Privacy is a right we all have too.

it's more fun to post random bits about myself all over the forum in different places

that way, if you want to get to know me, or are otherwise feeling stalkerish...

it can be like an easter egg hunt

LOL

Consider me a stalker then :D I must confess that many times I see you have responded to something, I click on it because your responses are often hilarious :D

I understand your meaning but the reason I, and I'm sure many others, don't want to put too much on here in terms of info is so that we're less identifiable.
I know the chances of somebody I know finding me might be slim, but then if I managed to come across this website purely on the basis of a Google search about something unrelated, then anyone can.

Have you heard of Tineye?

I found this site the same way.

I hate video chatting, i hate how i look in the cams i buy, or the pictures i take compared to what i look like in a mirror in my bathroom. I prefer talking on Vent, or TS3.

I just have vocal BDD but video chatting is okay; I guess... aside from occasional unconscious silly faces and expressions. loll. always can be awk at first. But hard without the "chatting" part.

Also depends where... I often am bleh at home in feeling; more open outside. I mean, sometimes it feels too formal I don't know but can be fun. But yeahhhh frankly, video chat can be good practice and there's always an off button. Or duck tap or a sheet you can throw over the camera =D

For me I rather share personal information thru private message or by text message. I don't like the idea of others seeing what I have to say.

Then what's the point of video chatting if you can't see who you are talking to? why not just get Ventrilo, or teamspeak 3? you just need to talk, not see. I used to use vent and TS3 ALL the time back when i played cod4 for PC competitivly.

Would be nice.. There are some people on here who never revealed where they are from, and never posted their photo. It´s strange for them being around for so long and you still wonder who they are. And sometimes I don´t even know if they´re a male or female.. Even more puzzling if they´re a male and have female's avatar or the other way round. Saying the country I think would be also good because there can be sometimes huge cultural differences.. or once there was someone from Africa (I guess) who didn´t write good english and got apprehensive comments about it. On the other hand I agree why people don´t like to disclose these personal things, I am quite reluctant to do it myself.

I feel "safer" responding to posts which don't have a "human face" as such. So i actually prefer knowing the least possible about who they are, including whether male/female. It's what i'm used to - just "objects". But i don't mind images of animals, insects or nature (for avatars), as I feel I can "trust" the posters more behind such images.

And now the analyse part... :D

Highest trust
. . . Avatar (animal/insect/nature/..)
. . . Just a name (no avatar)
. . . Avatar (sth else)
. . . Avatar (person - not them)
. . . Avatar (person - them)
Least-highest trust
