I hate my English teacher

He has the most annoying personality of any teacher I've known and I've been unfortunate enough for him to be my English teacher for year 9, 10 and 11.

He has two moods:
1. super duper casual, where he makes crude and obnoxious jokes and insults students in a playful manner, because acting like a douche is the best way to secure good relations with your students (sarcasm).

2. super duper strict, where he looks at everyone in a mean way and any glimmer of compassion he ever had is thrown out the window. In this mood he really sets me on edge.

Any class I'm with him I loathe, mainly because he has a tendency to pick on students to answer questions or to contribute to discussions. Just today, he picked on me and I mumbled a barely audible response. He said "Speak up! Can't hear you". I tried again but he didn't hear me, so he just asked for the page reference. I forgot the page reference and I told him I didn't know what page the answer I had was on. He probably didn't hear me that time either because he just ignored me, moved on and asked the same question to the person sitting next to me. Then I heard a whole bunch of whispering around the class and sweated a whole lot and my face was blushing. Now I keep replaying that scene over and over.

I hate how just one little thing like that can screw up my day so much.
Hate being quiet as well. Too often I'm asked to repeat things over and over, I'm so used to just saying nevermind when people can't hear me.

Similar experiences anyone?

He sounds like a psycho and a pig. A psycho pig. ;)
That sounds like a very humiliating experience for you, I am sorry. I've faced hundreds of similar in the last few years, and take solace in the realisation that everyone else has forgotten by now. You'll only be the talk for a minute, and 99% of the time not even that.
I hate being quiet too, so I try not to be. Sometimes this can make the problem worse though, because you start hating yourself for being like that, instead of taking small steps to fix it. The very first person I served today at work, I made myself give them the spiel about upgrading blah blah blah and he just stared at me arrogantly and was like "I can't hear you, but ok." I felt so stupid afterwards, then thought that there is no need to torture myself with guilt or blame or I'll continue to do the same thing for the next 100 people.
So yeah I think the key is either baby steps out or acceptance.
Anyway back to your teacher... sounds like he can't handle his job very well. This treatment makes you feel little and insignificant, but just remember that he has a problem or he wouldn't be so rude to students, especially the nice ones who don't give him any shit.
Don't worry, school doesn't last forever.

a good trick that works is to clear your throat loudly right before you answer when called upon in front of the whole class like that.

As a teacher I understand him having to pick on people answers in class. We need to do that as part of the curriculum standards. Sorry it sucks I know :(
We have a lot of shitty kids over the years so depending on his age he might be very jaded towards kids and his job. Which is not an excuse but more of a 'its not you it's him'

Maybe so, I sometimes hear him complain about his own kids!

I'm an English teacher hahah!

Don't worry, I won't hold a grudge against you :D I'm sure you're much better at teaching than the English teacher I have.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your teacher, but I'm sure he has trouble with a lot of teenage pupils and his patience has well and truly run dry.

I liked my English teacher at the back end of school. Mrs. Cuthbert. :) I wonder how she's doing now.

I got lucky and had good English teachers all through high school. The one I had my last two years was smoking hot, she was really cool too. She figured out I couldn't write in cursive and didn't push the issue at all. I miss seeing her every day.
