Well done Alias and all the best with your treatment. Just remember, seven percent of the population has SA so you're not that unusual (I mean that in a good way). :D

Hi well done.I went a few weeks ago and it' the best move i've made.it finally made me accept that i have a problem.i think the first thing that you must do is accept yourself as you are now, warts n all.tell yourself that you are a good person with sa,tell yourself over and over again.you will feel much better and relaxed and you will hold ure head higher.don't fight the sa,try to ignore the negative thoughts that you have, don't dwell on the past, but concentrate on the present and congratulate yourself for taking this "positive step".best of luck,it's a long road and i have gone slightly off a few times, but i'm dertermined to have a better life and i think u are too.i think the people who have suceeded are the ones that put in the effort and kept going even when the road got rough, this is enough inspiration for me.the only way you can fail,is if you continue to feel self pity and give up too soon.stick with it and u will be glad u did. :)

aliasgirl, good on ya, I hope the appointment goes well.

If you do start to get nervous before the event, it might not be a bad idea to write down some notes so that you can remind yourself of everything you want to say at the appointment, even hand the note to the doctor if it gets hard for you to talk when there.

Say goodbye to your old life, this is the start of your new, optimistic life.

pitkreet is right, maybe you should right down some notes. keep it concise, and have it either for your own benifit, or to actually give to the doctor. Before youv started talking about it openly and arnt ashamed of it anymore, it can be tremendously difficult, i remember because i used to be like that.

i know what you mean about you want meds, and will try other things, afterwards. if you dont get what you want from this doctor, try another. if worse comes to worse, let me know, and ill see if i can get a prescription for you. my doctor gives me whatever i want straight away what a legend

but yer good on you this is a great step. one of my friends who is recovering from sp, she is a great example. she has done everything possible, joined groups, has various meds\supplements, a regular psych, lots of knowledge about thinking pattterns and such .. everyone is different and we all have different needs .. but yer i mean i think people that get better are people who put it out there, talk about it, and take pro active action.

my dad always says, if you keep doing what youv been doing, your gonna keep getting the results youv been getting. You cant "think" your way confident by yourself mate.

wel done aliasgirl.sounds like you are on the right road.yeah it feels good to tell someone about this.have you thought about asking for some therapy.i have just started cbt and it seems to be good so far.it's not a quick fix,but there ain't any.the thing i like about cbt is that it doesn't dwell on the past, but on the present.i don't believe that some therapist going over your past can help sa.it's the faulty thoughts and beliefs that we have right now that need to be addressed.i am also on meds and they have helped to lift my depression, but the therapy is also essential for the long term.good luck. :D

congratulations aliasgirl !! you've taken that first step that a lot of people don't take - you've asked for help, you've also admitted that you have a problem - and you didn't burst out crying at the docs :D

i hope things go well for you on the drug, but if not, don't despair, there are many others to try - some drugs work well for some people, some don't

i think you should consider going to see a therapist no matter how well the drugs suit you - chances are that if the drugs work, when you try to come off them, your symptoms will gradually (or immediately) return, so the only real cure is to get into your mind and change your way of thinking - hopefully the drugs will make you feel happier and more motivated to start therapy

keep us informed

Yeah well done Alias. That broken sleep is a sure sign of depression, one I am very familar with. The medication Should help you no end once it starts to take effect.

I would not worry about feeling strange on the medication. You probably won't feel much different at all until the medication takes effect and this can take a couple of weeks or so but I guess that you already know that.

Talking to the Psychologist should be easy than talking to the Doctor because they have a better understanding (generally) than Doctors about your condition. All the best.

PS. You may actually experience some greater nervousness. This is an effect of the medication working and is only a temporary thing.

Well done. The meds should help with the depression and low self esteem. But you definetly should ask to be refered to a CBT therapist,as they will help with the long term reduction of anxiety.Try to make this appointment asap as you sometimes have to wait for quite a while to see one,as they are still quite thin on the ground.keep up the good work, this is the first positive step and there will be many more.view this as the point where you decided to change your life.don't look back at anything you regret from your past,as you can't change anything, just start to live your life from Today on. :D
