I don't feel comfortable speaking.

regarding remaining mute, i know what you mean, where i work at the moment i can stay mute for the whole shift mainly because i don't relate to some of the people there who are already in cliques, i mean i do sometimes initiate banter but i dont really carry a conversation at all...but i can be chatty just not at work where i'm really out of my comfort zone...i've tried drinking two beers before going to work once and i was chatty for the entire shift...it was great, i felt relaxed and didnt care about what people thought. of course i'd prefer if that happened naturally...

I hear ya, I've spent my whole teenage years without saying a word. Do you talk to yourself out loud? It's embarrassing at first, but it really helps gaining confidence. If you're courageous enough you can even record and listen to your own voice to get a better control on the way you sound. Listening to myself made me realize that I sounded really tired and depressed, and I sounded better when speaking in a more assertive way.

Now if only I could have conversation with other people the same way I have conversation with myself...

I have a speech impediment called stuttering, so I totally understand anxiety when you speak...happens to me all the time. But I also know I can talk to at least one person who won't judge me or think it weird at all...my husband, so I talk to him a lot :)
