I AM PLANNING TO STUDY PSYCHOLOGY(please read)

I am 16 years old and i will be heading to college this September. I remember always being a shy little girl but then at the age of 9, i developed SAD, obviously i didn't know that something was wrong with me. Experiencing all this type of problems and knowing the feeling of having people that were close to you like your parents, brothers and friends not understand, I feel like i will be able to understand people easily. It doesn't matter wether you have social anxiety, or any other mental disorder exct, i have this thing that i always look at different angles and situations without judging or critizing.

I told my mom that i am planning to study psychology and she told the whole world and then she said to change my major because ppl said i won't make any money. Of course i am insulted, but helping people is my passion. I hope that one day i can overcome or be able to at least dimish the anxiety i feel all the time. I seriously want to help people with social anxiety in the future and not just ppl that suffer of social phobia, but people with harder problems and different mental states. I want to one day make money so that i can help the poor(specially kids), i am very emotional and i hate to see ppl suffer and die of hunger. I am planning to travel the world and helpppppp EVERYBODY!!!!!!!. If it wasn't for my social anxiety...I will be HUGE but then again...I seriously want to help people!!! i really doooo........

...If it's what you love, do it. A lot of people have a hard time deciding what to do with their lives, at least you know what you want to do. Don't let your mom change your mind. It's your life. And anyway, there is money in it, but money isn't everything. And you don't have to necessarily have your own practice, you can work for companies, group homes, etc. I hope you go through with it. :)

You need to do what YOU want to do, not what someone else thinks is best for you. Whether its a route to making loads of money or not, there's a lot to be said for doing a job you enjoy. By the way my psycholist has made a load of money out of me! If you get steared along by someone to do something your heart is not in then you won't do so well and won't be so happy. I got steared in the wrong direction by my parents and ended up resenting them and having to go back and do what I wanted again as well as work.

Go with what you feel is right.

Take care.

There's more you can do to help people than give them money ;) I have a family member who spends a lot of time in Africa doing physical work like building, digging wells, fund raising in the UK in between while he works.

Go with your dream!

Thanks everyone for replying. Sometimes i feel like wtf am i going to do in college!! I find psychology very very interesting but then again i feel like what if i don't get a job...what if this...what if that...

MIss_amy...I don't mean to make money to give it to people, i mean to make money to be able to help ppl that need food, shelter, clothing exct exct. I don't know what money means since i never get anything from my parents but i do know that with money you can sort of help in some form. The major thing in life is love.......

I graduated college May 2007 with a degree in psychology. I have had a couple folks tell me that it's pretty much a useless degree. But, I have never been the sellout type - so I stuck with it. Go with your passion, your itnerest, your heart. Other people just have different desires and you don't have to fall prey to their dreams.

It's true that you will probably have to go on to get a masters. But, if you love psychology, you will not mind this at all. I plan to go back for psychiatric nursing or occupational therapy. And, psychology is a good degree to help me get into these programs.

hey, i think its great you want to use your expereinces to apply them and to help other people. have u explored the job spec of a psychologist? im not sure if ur from UK or not, so i think that changes depending on where your from to what the job spec is. i wanted to be a psychologist to, done my A levels and stuff, done psychology A level too. i realy recommend u look into particualar types of psychologist (clinical, occupational etc) becuase that helps decide what you would like to do, but also degrees where you can learn paticualar theropies and pracitise them. like for me personaly i found behavioural psychology to be a heap of shit lol i was more into cognitive psychology, mind over matter so to speak.
i would also reccomend exporing social work and counciler work too, because it is similair but again different. also if ur not like me and have the brains explore psychiatry, i found out that psychiatry is what i wanted to do but i didnt have the right qualifications.
good luck to you though!
