How do you cope when life knocks you down?

So life went and did what life seems to do so often, knock you back down. But the subject of this thread isn't entirely based around my experience, I'm interested to know how others cope with disappointment. You see, (and yes I realise I'm going back to my own experiences here) I react terribly when I'm knocked down just when I start to feel better about myself. In the past that's lead to spells of depression and so on.

This is a common reaction I'm sure, but I'm fascinated to see how others cope with having a 'feeling happier about yourself' moment being slammed in the face with a car door by some other life matter. I'm sure you know the sort of thing I'm on about, being told your not good enough or that your getting in the way etc..

How do you cope?

All the best examples for me is when I think about my situation in hospital, under control, and pick the right time to observe visitors and staff going in/out of the ward (a patient's world) and how to get through the doors.

Pack up, pulling all the tubes and cables out of me, ready to run at a quiet moment, such as midnight, and choose freedom.

Something you can't do so easily when you're in jail.

I usually play video games or try to find someone to talk to. This usually works for me though but then again it is only temporary and by the time I start feeling in a good mood my mind drags me back down to depression, back to stage 1 and what the cause of the problem to put me in that mood just arises.

hey JJB , welcome

i always coped with the stuff i like , usually on a bad day , getting home and doing the stuff that i like really helps , anything positive really , acts as a counterweight for me , especially when you don't have anyone to tell you that you are great , you might start believing whatever insults were thrown at you , usually distracting the mind from those thoughts with somehting that you like helps
