Happiness

On a biological level, I think happiness helps us survive. For example, when we're happy, we're less likely to engage in dangerous activities such as binge drinking or anything suicidal. Moreover, when we're happy, our hearts release hormones to lessen feelings of anxiety.

We can also turn this into a philosophical argument, but we'd first have to define happiness.

I suppose it would be a bonus to share happiness with someone, however, all my happiest moments as an adult, have been experienced in my own company. The times I have been happy have been rare, but they are times when I feel I have triumphed over adversity, with hard work and some good fortune. And events in life take a more positive turn. Happiness, is those times in life, that I have reached beyond fear and failure, and held onto for a short while everything I ever hoped for, and believed the impossible could come true. Those are the moments that keep me trying to live, that is the purpose of those moments of happiness.
