First Timer On Forum - My Story

Hi All

Thought I share my story with you guys and also seek your assistance and advice as it seems very few doctors and general practitioners have an idea how much we suffer. Maybe what I will mention below helps someone else figure it out or maybe find a common link that is triggering the sweat attacks. It’s a long one but hope it helps others and also for someone out there to help me.

For me it all started when I was 22-23 yrs old and my earliest memory was the New Millennium eve celebrations when I remember being in a party and starting to sweat from my forehead and scalp (crown and the hair line on top of the ears and neck). It was strange feeling as I was not used to sweating like that (even thinking about it now makes me feel like sweating, I can fell my forehead and scalp glands opening up).
I used to hit the nightclubs in winter fully clothed including a turtle neck wool top and a jacket on top and dancing for hours without even one drop of sweat.

The sweating was strange to me as I come from a middle eastern background and lived, till the age of 16, in a country where the temperature soared to 47 degree Celsius (yes u read that correctly!!) during long summer months and was not an issue at all going out in the evenings while temperature hovering around 45 and with 100% humidity and feeling annoyed about the heat but still feeling dry.

I have always been fit since I was a kid, never been overweight, always been an outdoor person and loved my cycling and running around and walking and as I got older I started going to the gym and became an addict of fitness and health. I eat well and refrain from junk food as much I can and watch my food intake in general.

I believe what triggered it for me was when I began using a Minoxidil based hair loss treatment which consisted of a lotion and pills. The hair treatment was fantastic and did its job well and I was not sweating for the first 18 months, but that changed around the end of 1999. I’m still on the hair treatment but I use half the oral dose but maintain the use of lotion as per original.

My sweat is not continuous but can occur at anytime, sometimes it is triggered. Smells such as the perfume Joop! Can make my face drip but the worst is a chewing gum called Extra, the green one not the blue. The faintest smell of someone chewing it makes me melt!! Forget about chewing it. The blue one has no effect; even thinking about it now is making me sweat. Chilli food can sometimes do it also.

Of course hot humid weather is my worst enemy but the funny thing is that sometimes I sweat much more when I go from a cold place to a 22 degree room than when I’m taking a walk in a 35 degree day and this is why I get pissed off. I can never put my finger on the trigger. Sometimes even when nose is itchy it make it feel like the same as when I smell the chewing gum. It’s amazing that I can sweat more sitting down than when I’m working out in the gym pushing heavy weights. I went on a 20 km bike ride the other day and the only place that I was sweating from was my forehead and scalp.

The sweat always starts from the forehead, and as u all know, u start thinking about it and it gets worse and worse, the scalp, then followed by the inner side of the elbows, the chest and then the tummy and back. There is also the feeling of heat being emitted from my body. It is like I’m going to be on fire.

I can sometimes walk into an interview and be completely dry for one or two hours even in a warm room but if I think about it and start worrying then it all begins.
I did find out, as most of you did, alcohol helps a lot but I prefer to be sweaty man over a drunken man. If I have a bit of alcohol then I can dance all night long with no worries.

Funny thing about it all is that I’m confident 31 yrs old successful engineer and have a good personality and about to get engaged to a gorgeous and intelligent girl who really doesn’t care about my sweating so sweating never affected my life in that sense. My problem is that I dread those big events and to be honest I’m starting to worry about my wedding day. Hate the fact the camera being focused on me with my face all shiny from sweat and my hair dripping like I just came out of the shower.

So far I tried the following:

- Stopping the minoxidil pills but that didn’t help much and I don’t want to stop the lotion as my hair is important to me too.
- Sage pills twice a day which were only effective for night sweats, this is another one I suffer from. Sometimes I wake up with my pillow, t-shirt and hair and face fully drenched in sweat even in winter.
- Ditropan. This is good stuff and definitely make a diff but u gotta take it a couple of hours before. I don’t want to get used to them and don’t want to use them daily. They make my mouth dry and give me a slight headache and feel of being lost. Look its not too bad and ive heard the body get used to it. But oral medication is something I wanna stay away from at first.
- Believe it or not but I find an icy mint makes me cool down very quickly. Try it!! Also drinking icy cold water.

Overall, I know some people here will tell me what u complaining about cause for me its not constant but I still wanna do the stuff I used to do when I was younger. Wanna go to a wedding and do our cultural line dancing without first guzzling down three glasses of beer!! As I said, im a fit person and only drink in moderation (very very moderate).

In the end, like most of u, my family tells me its normal, some people sweat more but the thing is my mom and dad don’t sweat a drop even at 40 degree celcius!!

Wow it is a long story but I definitely feel better telling it and hope someone tells me what to try next. I’m thinking about secure wipes (is maxim the same?) or maybe get the lotion if I can and can I use it on my hair without causing side effects (mainly hair loss)?

The next big event is only a month away (my engagement) then its my brother’s wedding and im one of the groom’s men.

Thanks all for reading my post.

Hi MmcFly, welcome to SPW!

The hair loss may be inevitable and perhaps the cream on your scalp is preventing your head from releasing heat. Nothing wrong with being bald either.

Maybe you are right but its kinda best of the two evils and i chose to go with the hair hehe.

I'm tempted to try the Face Saver. Waiting on the maker to reply to my questions mainly if it is medicated or not. If that doesnt work then il try the Maxim only when i need them on the occasion. Got Ditropan as back up too.
