Favorite movie about social anxiety?

I know this has probably been talked about before but what's your favorite movie about social anxiety or that has some character in it that is suffering from social anxiety?

I think mine is Lars and the Real Girl. I watched it again tonight. It's not really a very realistic movie or even just about social anxiety. But it sure is an amazing story about accepting other people with whatever problem they may have. There are so many great scenes in the movie that show how people both struggle and come to terms with accepting someone who is different than them or who may have a problem.

Punch-Drunk Love. I'm also really looking forward to the movie adaption of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I felt all emotional just watching the trailer.

I love Punch Drunk Love and it's probably my second favorite. It's another one that I've seen more than once. I love watching that movie just for the buildup to one scene in particular, where a baseball bat makes an appearance.

I don't think I remember What About Bob so I'm definitely going to check it out. Maybe I watched it as a kid but don't remember if I did. Girl Interrupted was great too. I'm sure I'll watch Perks of Being a Wallflower when it comes out too. Thanks everyone. I'd love to hear more favorites.

Actually I think it might have been a crowbar or something else, and not a bat. I just didn't want to give away the whole scene with what happens first in case people haven't watched it. Definitely a must watch movie for anyone with social anxiety though.

I think Roger Dodger is possibly a movie about social anxiety. An cynical uncle tries to teach his (socially anxious) nephew how to pick up women and lose his virginity.

I've been thinkin about this for years.

I'm a writer

I wanna write the story

I wanna play myself in the movie, now, finding a suitable junior actor, and an older one for the end of the tale, becoming the person who produces and directs a movie of their own life for the first time, involving violence, adventure, escaping society, travelling the ocean, and the rest of the planet. Making an Impression

Wondering if the movie would integrate my marriage, starring me in the boxing ring during the marriage, or if this event would occur after the movie was complete... or its sequels

Some productions have made something to me, when a trapped intrinsic character manages to flourish...

We Bought A Zoo
Bourne Identity
Gattaca

There are more

I used to like the stuff the characters went through on the American tv show, Scrubs...

They had a scene where the blonde girl Elliot trips in the cafeteria. They flashed to a high school scene where she had braces, & headgear, & was tripped by a cheerleader.... Of course, she was wearing her band practice uniform...

Delightfully horrifying social moments. I found the narrative by JD, & the positive outcomes to be comforting in tough times.

It's not specifically social anxiety, per se, but I have always loved the movie Benny and Joon. I watched it first as a pre-teen and it changed my world. It made me realize that it's okay to be different and a little (or a lot) quirky.

A recent movie called "Adam", about a guy who is eccentric, has SA and works in Electronics, lives in a city apartment and starts talking to a girl who lives in the apartment nearby, she is very accepting of him and they form a bond. Great film.

Thanks again everyone. I'd love to hear more and I'm making a list to watch. Add TV shows or characters too if you want.

It's neat to see some different movies I haven't heard of before. There are so many movies probably where social anxiety isn't neccessarily the main part of the movie, but that a character clearly struggles with something like it, whether it's shyness, social anxiety, avoidant personality, aspergers, autism, etc. And yeah there are so many TV shows too with characters that have shyness or social anxiety.

------------------------------

I watched What About Bob last night. It reminded me a bit of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles which I really love. It was hilarious and neat to watch a pure comedy about someone with problems because when I think about movies about SA I was mostly think about serious ones. Though most of the time we don't feel like it, it would probably be good if we could just laugh about our problems more often instead of taking them so seriously.

Thanks I've added Roger Dodger to my list of movies to watch. And I liked Benny and Joon too. Maybe I should rewatch it sometime.

I also watched We Bought A Zoo. Thanks it was a great movie. I was actually thinking that Scarlet Johanson's character had quite a few signs that she really had social anxiety. Her character didn't really come across that way but as far everything that she said about herself or that we learned about her character. Maybe if they had someone different play the role they would have seemed more socially anxious but it's hard to picture that with her and she seems super confident. I almost got the feeling that she didn't portray the role maybe quite how it could have been. But I guess it is like that with some people with social anxiety in real life too who come across as confident. Yeah I'd definitely say her character probably had social anxiety pretty bad without the subject really being a huge part of the movie.

Yeah I saw Adam and it's definitely one of my favs too. It was really great and I think it's one of the more realistic movies that seriously deals directly with social anxiety, aspergers, autism, etc. Another similar one that I don't think is well known was called Snow Cake, and it was starring Sigourney Weaver.

Thanks again for letting me know some great movies.

In "Adam" the guy had asperger's syndrome, which is much different than social anxiety. The best movies I've ever seen about social anxiety is the recent film "Nerve" and "Adaptation" starring Nic Cage. Ever seen those?

"Adaptation" starring Nic Cage.

I love Adaptation :D Actually, most of Charlie Kaufman's films centre around characters that struggle with social interactions and relationships. Synecdoche, New York and Being John Malkovich are two good examples, and also amazing films too.

Probably why Kaufman is my favourite screenwriter.

not that different, yes technically different conditions but with similar anxious symptoms around others.
