Mine would have to be "Watchmen" because of how faithfully they stuck to the source material. (Well, apart from the ending, but I can see why they had to adapt that to something a little more filmable.)

"The name of the rose", by Umberto Eco; I liked the book a lot. The movie starred Sean Connery.

Die hard, I am not big on action movies but I imagine in general turning them into movies is a good idea.

Pride and prejudice wasn't so bad either.

Brideshead revisited WAS that bad and should never be watched

These were all decent adaptations:
The Cider House Rules
The Last of the Mohicans
Jurassic Park
The Princess Bride
The Killer Angels (Gettysburg)
Gone with the Wind
Everything is Illuminated
Girl, Interrupted
Henry V

I like it when the screenplay writer/director/actors take just a little bit of liberty so as to enhance the experience of the story, instead of just trying to make a carbon copy. The two should complement each other.

I think the movie adaption of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson was really good. I liked the choices they made for the cast, especially Robert Patrick as the father. Also I love the Harry Potter series, as some other people have said in this thread.

The first Hunger Games got me excited about book movies again, since I liked them both
