What is/are your favorite movie(s) that originated from a book or a series of books?

My number one favorite is probably Masterpiece Theatre's 2006 version of the book "Jane Eyre" written by Charlotte Bronte.

Some others that I love are:
"Oliver!" (1968), a musical version of Charles Dickens book "Oliver Twist,"
"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy written by J.R.R. Tolkien,
"Shawshank Redemption," written by Stephen King,
the 1973 cartoon version of "Charlotte's Web" written by E.B. White,
"Tipping the Velvet" & "Fingersmith" written by Sarah Waters,
"Contact" written by Carl Sagan,
"The Wizard of Oz" written by L. Frank Baum,
the 'Harry Potter' series written by J.K. Rawling,
the 'Twilight' series written by Stephenie Meyer,

& I'm sure there are many more that I can't think of right now.

The most obvious answer would be Lord of the Rings. ::p: I also liked The Time Machine, allthough it was very short and the book was much better.

I've never read the original books of the movies, but I'd have to say I rather enjoyed the ''Harry Potter'' series, and ''Watchmen'' which originated from a rather old and famed graphic novel.

I feel horrible that I missed "The Lord of the Rings" lol because they're some of my favorite movies of all times. Now I'm going to have to edit my post lol

Lord of the Rings (can't wait for the Hobbit.)

Anything by Jane Austen pretty much, mostly the more current stuff.

Agree on Jane Eyre too. I think they are doing another one with the girl who recently played Alice from Alice in Wonderland.

Memoirs of a Geisha was very nice, pretty movie.

Howl's Moving Castle. I think they should do a live action too though that is more faithful to the book.

Also, comic book movies ftw!

The Godfather and Trainspotting (I haven't read the book that originated that one though).

I've delayed posting mine since the big ones weren't very faithful adaptations. I'm talking about stories written by Robert E. Howard that are always turned into such crappy movies. Need proof?

Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
Red Sonja
Kull the Conqueror
Solomon Kane

Though in all fairness, I haven't seen that last one yet. I didn't find out about it until after it was made, yet before it's on DVD. But if they stayed true to form.... And I also have never read any Sonja stories. But if they're true to REH, they'll make women and non-European ethnicities look bad. Oh, the joys of being a white male in 1920s-30s Texas. ;)

Others include the obligatory LotR trilogy and Excalibur. And I'd kill to see a movie adaptation of Lord Timothy Dexter's A Pickle for the Knowing Ones or Plain Truth in a Homespun Dress.

:D

I thought the Hobbit was a much better book, is it actually being made as a film because I heard it was being made years ago but I've heard nothing since!

After the success of the Lord of the Rings, it will definitely be adapted to film. It's just taking a while.

And since we're comparing the two, I've always preferred the storytelling aspect of The Hobbit, too. But the Lord of the Rings just brings a lushness to the world that no children's story could ever hope to convey.

And please never ever read Tolkien after reading Robert E. Howard! Howard's writing reads so quickly that it makes Tolkien read like a boring old history book! Despite my occasional penchant for boring old history books and my love for Tolkien, even I couldn't stand it.

Let the right one in and the millenium series (the girl with the dragon tattoo, the girl who played with fire, the girl who kicked the hornets nest)

The only reason I'm watching the Harry Potter films now is just to see how it ends, I only read up to book 4, then I decided to just watch the films :D And they're splitting the last book into two films lol milking the franchise for all it's worth!

It got delayed because the studio is having probs, but it is in production.

Shutter island was a great book. The film was ok but it wasn't really that suited for film I didn't think.
