Expressing "different" opinions/beliefs

Once in a while, you are in a conversation where you may elect an opinion or belief that is very different. For example, you may say you believe in UFO's, Aliens, Angels, psychic powers or may argue about conspiracies or religion/politics. Somethings, from experience, people do not usually take seriously and do not like to delve into.

I have got in a lot of trouble on internet forums for expressing very different opinions(non-offensive) I've never thought the trouble was worth it. In real life(offline) whenever I state a "different opinion" it can attract funny looks.

Is it really worth it? Are there some opinions/beliefs you should withold from others?

Absolutely not RainMan(dont withhold your beliefs), i have the same problems especially when i talk about what is considered a taboo subject like the JFK conspiracy or UFO's, in real life i find that people just screw their noses up at me and its rare to find people that want to be open minded and discuss these topics, i find that conspiracies and religion a fascinating subject and you would be someone i would probably gel with in real life from what i can tell, so always express your opinions and as you said its in good taste and its not offending anybody.

Everyone should be allowed to express their opinions, of course!

That said, it's often all in the way you say things. Do you express your views as someone who is curious and open-minded, as a weird conspiracy theorist, or a gullible simpleton? Are you bombastic, or humble?

True, sometimes strange ideas turn out to be real, but I cannot expect others to accept new ideas if I can't substantiate them.

But sure, no topics should be taboo.

I am usally open minded and humble, when I express my opinions. I just know from experience, that regardless, people are quick to ridicule you for talking about it and labels come quickly.

Take for example how much ridicule, even slander, ufologists and parapsychologists have to face, even though they are working professionals.

If you can anticipate that somebody is going to react unreasonably to your opinions/beliefs, wouldn't it be wise not to state it in the first place? Most people just don't show the understanding and open mindedness that we would hope.
