A few days ago I was walking home and there was these three kids riding bicycles passing by (around twelve years old I'd say) and one of them shouted out an insult at me. I ignored them and didn't let it get to me. Once I got home though, I was rather bothered by it. The area I live in is rather downrun and you do get your fair share of these type of people, but it just bothers me that I didn't respond. I can't quite explain, but it didn't bother me but I felt I still should've responded? It's almost like they undermined me... Thoughts?

I used to get this when I was younger. Knowing I should really respond, but not being quick on my feet. Or how the person who just insulted me will react. But, eh, depending on the insult - like if it wasn't too sweary - I used to just throw the insult back at the person who said it. Failing that, respond with a sarcastic "Yeah, whatever".

Look at that stupid bitch *** mutha****a, carryin' a bucket!...shouted at me from a car driving by as I was taking a trash bucket to the dumpster at work one night. I found it hilarious for some reason.

I made a thread about this because it bothered me so much. I work downtown in my city where there's a huge amount of homeless people with mental issues. One day one of them walked into my path and as I was moving to get out the way he says, "Oh I'm sorry, you P***Y!!"

I kind of mentally shook my head and the whole thing was so unexpected that I just kept going. After I got to my desk, I started feeling worse and worse about not responding. I felt the same as you, as if it was maybe planned. I actually looked for him for a few days but of course, I never ran into him again. Eventually, I just filed it away as another thing I probably made too much of a big deal about.

Those kids sound like the chavy ratbags round my town who hang around in gangs, have disrespect for anyone who's not like them and always up to trouble, whether it's mugging some old lady on the street or trying to pick up fights then cry to mommy when someone fights back, or even worse things...

I used to get that, one Saturday night I walk out of the Kebab shop and some group of kids standing at the door just stood there staring at me, I kindly said excuse me please, (legs shaking) the guy glaring at me moved, as I past him. "Freak" some girl shouted. They don't even know me! Pisses me off, I'd like to turn round and say something Maybe being mind blank and walking away would be better than turning round and telling them what I'd like to say in my mind. Acting on their insults intimidation won't do anything, it could just make things worse and make them more big headed.

People like that are like cowardly dogs, all tough in a pack, they won't dare to provoke you alone.

I just say nothing, there's no point arguing with stupid people, those kind will stay stupid and unfortunately breed, let them. Responding to them puts you where they want you.

It feels the most humiliating when a toddler or young child does it, as they seldom lie. It makes me feel there's sth fundamentally wrong with me, and inferior as i've got no comeback for even a little child.

Why would you put any stock in what they say? They don't understand the world yet at that age.

In any case, what kind of insults have you gotten from children?

Usually it was sth like 'big boy' or 'baby' (as i look young for my age & height). Seldom happens nowadays, but i always took the "insult" to heart, sometimes getting angry, & regarding it as sth bad - a weakness/inferiority, that i should be ashamed of.

Thanks for your responses! I believe I need to stop overthinking so much and wasting a great deal of my time worrying about people who, I have great confidence, will not get anywhere in life.

This epitomises the type of person who just happen to roam my area, and I noticed you live in Wales, too - perhaps we might even live in the same town!? The breed of trash you described is widespread where I live. Thanks for your response - made me feel much better!

Felt the same way before. However instead of thinking that I should respond, I now justify my action with self-affirmation.

For example, you or I would say (to yourself out loud or in your mind):

"I was walking home. Had no time to respond." Repeat it at least ten times. (preferably ten times)

Or/ and

"I was walking home. Simply going from point A to point B." Repeat at least ten times (preferably 100 times).

The idea is to tell and convince yourself that your action was justified by what you were doing (going from point A to point B). You don not mention the insults, because it isn't important. What you were doing was more important.

If you want my suggestion of how to respond then contact me.

I live in a city, this behaviour is rampant. But you really should be proud of yourself for not responding, it was the right thing to do. Some people are just looking for a fight, and I'm certain you saved yourself further trouble.

Hi Namira,

Welcome back! What country is it, though? Just curious.

And have you been victim to this, yourself?

The one insult I'll always remember was a random one. I was on a course of roaccuatane for acne, as i'd had it for years, and the drugs made my skin quite red and blotchy, which got even worse in the cold. So i was walking out of school with some friends and a group of girls walked by and one shouted "Oh my god that's disgusting, you've got serious face problems". For someone already massively struggling with appearance issues, that one hurt. So much so that I made some excuses and went home, and skipped my afternoon lessons. I ended up skipping most of my last year at school because of those issues.

I had a guy ring me (wrong number), and as he's shouting for a person I tell him politely he's got the wrong number. With that, he called me a wanker and cut off. Ain't there just wonderful people out there.

Nothing you should be worrying about. Typically people will subconsciously put other people down to elevate their own status or "worth". So if someone is insecure and has low self esteem he/she will poison drip others to feel better about themself. You let those things go under your skin or even bother you, its impossible to have your own life; not ruled by the opinion of others.

So complete ignore mode. Dont act as if it doesnt bother you, but truly dont care about those little things. Every successful person deals with shaming. Look how much negativity donald trump for example has to deal with now. Do you think that bothers him? He has so much things to do he cant have the luxury to sit down and be distracted like that. That comes from a lot of negative experiences and a hardcore work ethic.

Typically the older you get or the more negative stuff happend to you the less you really care. Just from my own experience.
