a short explanation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

"a troll is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding"

Remus has a good point here though. If anyone notices a post by someone who's obviously out to cause trouble (a spammer, a past banned member, a flamer, whatever) don't reply. The reason for this is that lately I've had to delete a number of threads in their entirety because they were started by a troll. If you then reply to that, you lose your post too. So let me apologize to those affected by this already. I just want to try and keep this place as clean as possible. I also want to add that if you see anyone blatently breaking the rules, to please alert a mod (Remus, Chilling_Echo, or myself). We do eventually get around to weeding out the crap but we can't always get to it as fast as we'd like. So if people could help that way, I'd appreciate it. It's for the benefit of everyone here. Thanks all.

This thread needed reviving. People. Do NOT feed the troll. We have one or two of them on our nice site and they really do not deserve all the attention they get.

you guys are completely right about 'not feeding the troll'..and i myself am guilty of feeding them..responding, or whatever (cause they just royally piss me off  ) Even though i know it's better to ignore them, it's hard when you know there could be the more vulnerable person on here, or a new person, seeking some help..then they read the abusive crap..and may take it to heart :(

JUST A TIMELY REMINDER. WHATEVER YOU READ/SEE POSTED BY A TROLL TOTALLY IGNORE IT AND INFORM A MOD OF THE POST. :D

I've never done in any trolling in my time but I have spammed stuff like video game boards just for fun. The truth is if you don't respond and if you COMPLETLY ignore them, (Don't even quote their post, pretend like it isn't even there) it makes it no fun for them.

hi
i'm probably what you call a troll
severe personality issues that stop me from gaining what i need from social contact face to face..
so i post here and there..
slightest hint of rejection and i withdraw completely
whats the harm in humouring a troll
or even offering some help for whatever compeled them to "troll"
even on a fringe theory..
they may be looking around for help without admitting anything, posting their piece of mind to test the water.

if you dont even ackknowledge them... you may be confirming someones negative thought spiral.. and i think we all know where that leads.

I don't think you are a troll. I think your definition of a troll is different to what this thread is referring to. Troll in the context of this thread and Web forums/newsgroups is somebody who is being disruptive to the forum/group. I don't want to go into the details, but some trolls here were posting objectionable stuff and attacking people. This is meant to be a support group and some people here can be quite fragile when it comes how people react to them, so its important these places are supportive environment.

Anyway lets stop this talk about trolls.
