Children and Social Anxiety

Does anyone have children that have SA? My daughter has SA. She is starting school in September. I worry about her greatly. When her cousins play with friends, she plays alone as she is scared to play with kids she doesn't know. She is very shy when meeting people.

I worry that she will have few friends in school, and since I was the same way, she won't "grow out of it". I wonder if anyone has any experiences with children with SA? When is a good time to consider medication? I was thinking around 7 or 8 if it is severe....

Kyle, I didn't know you had a kid. Anyways, when i was younger i was very shy as well so i just recommend you to try to help her and get professional help. Its better if you do something about it now then wait till she gets older because it can get worst.

I think that's a tough question to answer... My sense is that I would be nervous about giving my children medication before, say, 16, just because I would worry about the potential impact that it might have on their developing brains... But then again, all of those stress hormones don't exactly have a great effect on brain development, either, so maybe it would be a good thing. Honestly, I'm not on expert, but I would talk to someone who is. I would also think about getting a therapist as soon as possible, if it seems to be a real concern, since the younger children are the more moldable their thought processes are. Some therapists will come into the home and perhaps that would be more comfortable for your daughter.

My son is only 20 months old and I already find myself watching him closely, wondering whether he will be okay. Often he will become very quiet and sort of disociate (zone out) around people, but other times he's such a charmer and takes joy in showing off... It's really hard to say at this point which way things will turn, but I hope that he'll be okay. I know what you mean about not wanting your child to go through the same things that you did...
