Career Building Job?

My sister is an AmeriCorps volunteer (paid volunteer) and her contract ends in June. She's looking for work but she's looking for a 'career building' position. I get that-I understand. Her husband says not to apply for any job that is not 'career building.'

We were at a grocery store the other day and my sis asked if they are hiring. She said yes, go online, fill out an application, etc. So she said to the lady, "well, I have a Masters in Higher Ed, so are they looking for managers?" The lady looked at her and said, "well, for manager positions, you have to work your way to that point and prove yourself."

Later that night, my sister told her husband and he said, no, that's not for you, I would go for a career building job, but (cowboyup - that's me) that would be a good start to get a full-time job.

I truly understand that she (as I do) need to look for a career building job, but right out the gate, you're not going to exactly land a 60,000 dollar job (usually). Plus where she is volunteering now, in higher ed, they are making budget cuts. I tried to tell her she can get a grocery store job to bring in money and still look for that all important career building job. She refuses.
She says she doesn't want to work with children, she doesn't want to work in retail (department stores) nor grocery stores because she feels that since she has a Master's degree, that would be beneath her.

Am I missing something? Or should she keep holding out for a 50,000 + a year job?
