Can Hyperhidrosis be from stress and only from stress?

I just found out about this condition. I've been sweating profusely all over. Not just sweating near specific spot such as having just my axillary's sweat, but my whole body sweat.
Whenever I get stressed out or am afraid of sweating, I then sweat. The sweat smells like fish..It's sort of a fight or flight symptom It's so embarrassing! It keeps me from wanting to go out sometimes. I have agraphobia I think from it. Help

Hi there,

Yep. Same here considering sweating, don't really notice much of a smell though, just changing clothes often nobody has ever commented to me on it either so I guess in that respect I'm 'lucky'.

I think by now it has been established HH is not solely from stress, that is, the medical world agrees it is due to a physical problem, although in general it seems they don't really know what is actually causing it. IMO, that might well be because they have never put enough effort in to find out because the general opinions that have always existed about HH (that it was a psycholigical problem, that is wasn't that bad etc etc). Regular psychological stress causes the HH to present itself more evidently, but is not the cause of the HH in the first place...

Now, with internet, HH sufferers have way more clout to demand treatment and more medics are slowly learning more and taking it more seriously because they too can now find out that multiple people all over the world have very similar symptoms, hopefully that will ultimately lead to better solutions for everybody.

First thing I would do is check out whether your endocrine system is working as it should. I didn't do that 3 years ago when I started to look for treatments and regret it very much, I started with it few weeks ago and already found some irregularities in the hormone levels of the thyroid gland (first thing they'll want to check), although as of yet it's hard to say if those are meaningful in terms of causing the sweating. Basically it's checking out whether you have an underlying condition that's causing the HH. I have to tell you that realistically, in only a relatively small percentage of HH sufferers an underlying cause can be identified. The fact that you seem to have generalized HH like myself (except for my head) could be an indication though. I initially skipped looking for that because I thought well, I don't really care what's causing it, I'll just have some botox injections and then all is well, but unfortunately it's not that simple, and identifying an underlying cause is probably the only chance at a 1-time 100% cure (in case the underlying can be cured) or at least keep you from going on with an undiagnosed condition...

If they can't find anything you could try the things on this site. Basically everything there is to know what you can try is on Pinker's thread at the top of the topics list, but I'm sure you've already found that...
