Bird Watching :)

Just wondering if there are any other bird watchers here? It's one of my favorite hobbies. I have a seed feeder, a bird bath, and a suet feeder on my deck. I love watching all my little visitors, they always make me smile.

Recently I joined Project Feeder Watch through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Somehow submitting my bird counts for science makes it even more fun. :)

Yep - love them, the colours, voices, personalities, styles of flight. here's some of my locals

Yes I'm a bird enthusiast. I get to see a lot of different birds where I live; though I do wish I could go somewhere near the equator and see the more exotic, colorful species that I've seen in photos. I'm so glad there are real birdwatchers out there who take photos for all to see. There's so much beauty and variety in the bird world, it's quite mind-boggling. I love birds!

Nice pics, Phocas. So colorful!

This little fellow visits me every summer.

Wow, such beautiful pictures from both of you! If you don't mind me asking, where do you each live? I've never seen any of those species here in Virginia.

I used to bird watch a lot as a kid, since my parents (especially my dad) got me into it when we moved here. Since we live in a rural area, there are so many more species of birds here to look out for. We used to do the Project FeederWatch, not sure if my dad still submits or not. Every year we get something about it in the mail, since we're only about 1 1/2 hours from Cornell University.

Seeing this makes me want to get into bird watching again. :)

Cool, if you do I'd love to hear about it. Especially since you live in such a pretty part of the country. :)

Thanks, they're just from an image search, I'd need a decent camera to get a nice shot like yours.

I do like watching birds, but I am not a sophisticated bird watcher. I like watching pigeons fighting for bread crumbs... and I like feeding the seagulls at the beach. One time there was a baby bird outside my work that I thought was injured so I put him in my coat pocket and brought him home with me. I took him back the next day and it was just so beautiful seeing the reunion with his mother. They went chirping crazy!

I was thinking about putting a seed feeder outside to attract more birds, but that wouldn't be a good idea with all the cats I have. A few weeks ago my tabby killed a pretty yellow bird I had not seen in this area before. It made me so sad. My mom said they were visiting from I don't remember where. But even just the plain brown birds amuse me. And pigeons. Ugly rats of the sky.

You have prettier birds there than we do in the States, IMO. :D

I'm pretty new to bird watching myself, I just started last winter. Slowly learning the more common species, and still struggling with all the different kinds of sparrows. That is such a cute story about reuniting the baby bird with his momma, I would have loved to see that!

Even if you have cats, you could still put up a feeder somewhere, you'd just have to put it somewhere the cats couldn't get to it. Like if you hang the feeder in the center of a clothes line in your yard, far away from anything the cats could jump from.

aside from the pileated woodpeckers drilling holes in the trees around my cottage

my favorite birds to watch in my neighborhood are the eagles

love to watch them soar over the bay, swooping down to pluck fish from the water

Funny. On Saturday, on the way back from visiting family in Maryland we stopped at the Conowingo Dam to watch some bald eagles. I got to look at birds, my brother got to play with his camera, and my sister got to pet some dogs that were there.

Yes, I enjoy bird watching. I really should go out and do it more often, as most of what's in the back yard consists of house sparrows and gray squirrels....

This morning I saw:

a beautiful female Northern Cardinal, unusually rich coloration on her
a Northern Mockingbird, who is being incredibly territorial and chasing off the other birds
a vivid Blue Jay
a House Finch
two American Goldfinches
two Carolina Wrens
and two American Crows

:D

:) Nice! I've been noticing lots of european goldfinches lately, I can't recall seeing them around much since I was a kid. Australia has recently come out of a long drought, so that may be the connection

Just out of curiosity I wanted to compare European and American Goldfinches. Interesting how different they are! :)

I didn't get to do my Feeder Watch count this weekend, I had gone to visit family. Can't wait for the next one.
