Anyone travel by themselves to a different country?

I'm curious to know if any of you have ever travelled by yourselves (or even with a friend) to a different place/country and lived there for a month or more.

I've always wanted to travel to the UK and live there for awhile. But, I don't like doing things by myself (and I have no friends willing to do such a thing with me, sadly). Walking through the mall by myself freaks me out nevermind being completely alone in a different country. But, I think it would be a huge step forward and would challenge everything I've ever known. So, have you done something like that? Or do you want to? Did it help you?

I travelled to New Zealand, China, America, and Australia alone... not for a month or more though, and i wasn't alone once there.. but flying alone was hard enough!! (i was and still am terrified to fly).... i guess this doesn't really pertain to your post, but it was a huge deal for me to fly that far by myself...

Yeah I did... some times alone, sometimes not... but when not alone, I am only willing to travel with people I really know well and with whom I am very close. I don't know if I would like it with a not so close friend, you really have to get along together because you can have some intense times (at least with the way I travel - totally random and disorganized).

First time I left alone, once I arrived, I went straight to the hotel and didn't leave for about 1 week except to eat and pay the room. Then got some courage and started really travelling. Yes it is very hard for someone with social phobia or AvPD. Everytime I travel to other countries, it takes a good 3-4 weeks for me to get comfortable. But it is absolutely worth it.

Yes, I lived in England for a year.

I only stayed in a backpackers' hostel for a couple of weeks, but since that time I have stayed in backpackers' hostels in Sydney. They are quite good, since backpackers tend to be nice people. The average ratbag does not pass the visa requirements, save up for the trip, is not prepared to stay in basic accommodation for an extended period, take their chances on being able to find work and then work in probably more than one basic job. Whoever is prepared to do that generally finds it a worthwhile experience.

I stayed in Sydney for almost three months earlier this year.

i really want to travel to the states once i graduate and perhaps do some internships or trainee programs there, i'll have to go alone and while it's something i really want to do i'm pretty worried about getting over there and feeling alienated and that my SA will get a lot worse.

I have travelled by myself once and it was such an enlightening experience, and not only for SA matters, that i can't wait to do it again.
What's amazing is that you tend to forget your social inhibitions for the thrill to finally do something you've dreamt of takes over.
Therefore i can only highly recommend travelling on your own - even if it sounds scary. Before taking the plane, at the airport, i was wondering what the hell i was doing and was thinking of going back home, but once at the arrival, i was just dying to discover what was there to see, thus naturally pushing my fears aside.

I'd love to be able to travel by myself to another country as well, but same as you, am too afraid :/ On top of that, I wouldn't really know how to get to places XD
I'd love to visit New Zealand. Some place like that :D (that's where they filmed Lord of the rings) it's such a beautiful landscape.

Oh, and I live in UK :) if u ever visit here, I'll give you a tour of London haha XD

Travelled to UK/Europe for honeymoon, spent a few weeks in Italy with partner's family. This was good for SA as I don't speak italian so I didn't have to talk much - but my eating phobia followed me there.

Years ago applied to work in New Zealand and Antarctica - neither successful

Wouldn't mind doing volunteer work somewhere tropical

My wife went to Israel, Ethiopia, and Jordan on a school trip over the span of 3 months.

Ive never left canada. I have severe anxiety when even suggested with the prospect. I dont know what it is. Not about anything like i might never come home or any stupid thing like that, but its so severe i just cant do it....

Its been a nuisance for a very long time. And its so odd, i can drive from one coast to coast to coast, and not have any issues....but i just freeze and need to get away if someone asks me to go with them to the US for the day or somthing. Ive deliberately not gotten a passport so I have a reason/excuse to not do it.

Sucks :(

That sounds awesome! :D

I have family and family friends (who I don't know very well) that live in different parts of the UK as well as a friend who is dying for me to visit her in Germany. I just wish I had the courage to go!

Thanks for sharing your stories everyone! It's nice to know that I'm not alone in feeling terrified of travelling by myself somewhere far...And it's also nice knowing that some of you have travelled by yourself and have been successful!
