When im by myself hardly anyone speaks to me or tries to make any contact.

When I take my cute 2yr old dog out I have cars stopping, people running out of there houses smiling and talking to me

does make you feel more alive and somewhat wanted

What type of dog do you have? Animals can really help to break the ice. It would still be hard with my SP, but I would be more likely to approach someone with an animal. At least that would give me something to comment on and talk about. I also feel a lot more at ease when I'm around animals. They comfort me and really do help relieve the stress of everyday life. Especially dogs, they are wonderful. I couldn't imagine my life without one. :)

I had a really nice dog, a lurcher, which are similar to greyhounds. I loved to stroke her which was comforting, because she was so friendly and would start licking your hand or your face haha. Had to get put down about 2 years ago though though. And so did the cat a few months ago.

I heard thats how Davina McCall met her husband. She saw him walking his dog and wanted a way to relate. She went out and bought a dog the next day.

This is why I'd love another dog. After my golden retriever, Ellie, died in 2006 (luekemia) I decided I wouldn't have another again because I didn't want Ellie to look down from Heaven and think I was replacing her. It's been over 3 years now though, and I've said good night to her photo/memory every night since she died, and will continue to do so... which I hope is proof to her that was very special to me and I will never forget her.

So now I've decided I would like a dog because it would help me so much, socially. It would give me a reason to go down the beach, or just out locally - to walk the dog. As already said, it's a good ice breaker too and people are more likely to start a conversation with you when you have a pet with you. They are also a good outlet for your affection, I find - it's nice to have someone to hug when you feel lonely/sad.

Dogs tend to be more affectionate than cats. I don't have a dog but a friend has an English Springer Spaniel and it's the lovelyiest dog i've ever seen, he's so soft and affectionate. He stands on his two back paws for you to stroke him and if you don't give him attention for a second he'll start stroking your leg with his paw to get your attention.

Dogs are amazing animals, and what's more - they just want to please you! Studies have shown that dogs actually prefer seeing their owners happy more than they prefer treats. Dogs are more motivated to be "good" to make their loved humans happy. Not only do they break the ice, but they also can be comforting and wonderful company.

Wish i cud still have my Rottweiler Rocky. He made me fall in love with dogs even more. Dont think i will ever have another one like him. He was loyal to me an my family, and loved me even when i had to giv him a lil discipline. I used to walk him, and if anybody came too close, that was their asss lol

Dogs are great for people with Social Anxiety. And I am certain that Ellie would be looking down with one of those big doggy smiles if you adopted another dog. I'm sure she'd love to see you happy, and I'm sure she'd love to see a canine basking in all of the love that she had and still does have. You can never replace a dog, ever... They're all too different. I'll always love my Jesse who passed away about two years ago, but I've adopted another dog since. I bet if Jesse were to be looking down, he'd be happy to see that I was happy, that I was given love and company rather than holding back because he's gone. Jesse will never be even comparable to my new dog, Dakota, and vice versa. They both have eternal places in my heart, as do my other two dogs who were lucky enough to have known Jesse.

I rescue animals. Mostly dogs and cats. My new year's resolution was to rescue 50 dogs and cats from euthanasia, but by the end of April I'd rescued over 150 cats and 100 dogs... My main reason for being so, so loving towards animals is that unspoken bond and friendship that they provide so willingly. There are service dogs for anxiety, service dogs for depression, and obviously servicce dogs for much more... In my opinion, everyone with SA should own pets. Even my rats, rabbits and lizard warm my heart. :) Without my animals, who knows where I'd be.

Ha ha! No one will mess with you if you have a Rottweiler by your side! My mums cousin used to have one and it would just stand there growling at us un the hallway...I was only a kid then and i've never been more scared in my life, although he was a softy at heart.
