Am I sleeping too much?

It's getting common for me to sleep 10 hours a day during the summer evenn if I do nothing all day (like most days). Still, when I went on a 6 day vacation recently I slept 8 hours a day and when I came back, I kept that rhythm for around 5 days, after which I got back to 9 and then 10 hours a day.

But today I slept 11 hours, and 7 hours later I fell asleep for 30 minutes (then I woke up with my mum making noise, otherwise I'd sleep a whole hour). I didn't do much today, I just watched stuff on my pc and read a book. Same goes for yesterday, though I was at the gym for 45 minutes (as usual, I go twice a week).

Why am I sleeping so much? I think I have a good enough diet and I think I sleep well and I don't snore. I'm slightly underweight. One of the fans in my computer makes a lot of noise and I keep it on most of the day because that's where I spend most of my time, could that be the cause?

Maybe. I had a classmate who slept almost the whole day during summer. Maybe you're just bored and couldn't find anything else to do. 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended for most people, but other people need more or less.

Are you on any meds? It's a pretty common side effect.
As long as it's not preventing you from getting through a regular work/school day, it's fine, isn't it?

Not on any meds. I'm not in school or employed right now so it's not causing me any special problems, but I'm a bit worried since I thought sleep was meant to regain your energies and I barely waste any energy at all during the day.

Hmm. 8 seems to be the recommended hours of sleep, and you're not that far off. As Biev said, as long as it's not interfering with your daily activities you should be fine really. Sleep is good after all!

Any chance you could pass some of that sleepiness my way? I barely get 6 hours a night and I'm starting to look more and more like dr. Frankenstein these days. :p

as much as we like to think we are, we aren't machines

there's no set amount that is right

sometimes we need more, sometimes we need less

from most of what I've seen - most people in modern western countries get way too little sleep

part of that whole pressure to go, go, go, do, do, do

^ This.

Now that I don't have to wake up early for school, most of my nights consist of anywhere between 8 - 10 hours of sleep. Some days I take half hour naps, but otherwise I feel pretty okay for the rest of the day.

I just feel like I'm spending half my day sleeping and I don't do anything interesting in the other half.

Maybe it is using the pc and reading making your eyes tired. How do you feel when you are awake? If you feel fatigued all the time, it might be worth finding out why.

Then I think you should focus more on trying to find something interesting to do with the other half : )

I don't think you're doing enough. Boredom is probably making you sleep a lot. Ever done nothing but sit in a chair all day and realise you're barely keeping your eyes open? Under-stimulation and prolonged exposure to computers can make you sleepy. You said you're unemployed and not at school - that is a big indication that you're not getting enough stimulation.

Going to the gym is a good idea, although I would up that from two days a week, but keep it less strenuous because you're underweight. That physical energy will make you feel better, and you'll sleep better, too. :)

Despite all that, 10 hours of sleep a night is something I can only dream of...if you'll pardon the pun. Well done on that. :)

I guess that could be it. But I can't bring myself to actually go outside and look for a job. When I'm looking through job offers online I always find a reason (perhaps an excuse?) as to why I'm not fit for that job.

I can't really explain it, it's like I want to do something but there's something keeping me from even starting.

really is just sounds like you had a lazy day, but if youre worried about it ou should get a sleep schedule.. youre throwing off your sleep patterns. try to go to bed and wake up at the same times everyday. Its okay to toss a nap in there too if you want.

I think it's just a lack of confidence and motivation that does this. I've been there and (not) done that. ::p:

Next time you look for jobs online, perhaps you can ask yourself why you would be good for the job, and apply anyway. Even if you think it's unlikely you'll hear back, you'll be happy you took that step to apply and forced your way through whatever's holding you back.

You can still go outside for other reasons, too, and getting a bit of sun and light exercise will do you the world of good. :)

I'd simply set the clock to normally not sleep more than 8 hours. That's already a lot of sleep for your body, and I personally would be sad for all the time lost that I'd sleep more than 8. I mean, sleeping for 10 hours a day would mean losing 14 hours a week. That's like missing a complete day of my life once every week.

I sleep a lot too (10-12 hours not seldom), and if given a chance I can sleep days and nights in a row. Which I love of course.
