Chain of Association or Free Association in Developing Conversational Skills

I've been trying this out recently.

You talk to yourself 5-10 minutes at a time daily, literally about ANYTHING.

By doing so you are training yourself to freely talk about whatever, and make connections to different topics more easily.

This state of conversational flow can be applied to conversations with others.

Example Talking to Myself

"Look at that fat dog. Dogs are supposed to be healthy and limber like their wolf cousins. My cousin is taller than me, about 6'5 and plays basketball. He could be a professional basketball player, like Michael Jordan. And arguably, MJ is the best bball player of all time. But he's not the only cool MJ, what about Michael Jackson? Oh yeah, his music is great, especially that song Thriller. Speaking of thrillers, that movie Split was quite good. It was scary but intriguing and took place in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is cool, I've never been there but there's a lot of history there. The Declaration of Independence was adopted there in 1776. But, I'm not adopted. I have biological parents in my life. My dad really likes building stuff and my mom likes art. I tried drawing for a little bit but it wasn't for me. I'm more of a music guy. I love the piano, even if I'm just a novice."

The topics are random but the connections are there, as you can see, but the goal is to eventually be able to relate new things to whoever you're speaking to quickly. It makes your conversation more flexible, less stressful, and probably more interesting.

You can also practice it as a conversation with yourself instead of a stream of thought, like I did above. And if you can't do it out loud, do it in your head.

Iv been doing this for years. lol . I think it definitely helps to think out loud sometimes. even when you dont have anyone to talk to I think its still healthy to get your thoughts out, regardless if anyone is there to listen.

also something to add to this, I sometimes record myself talking kind of like an "audio journal" . just to get idea/thoughts out....because that way if somone accidentally over-hears me I can say "I was just doing an audio journal for a class I'm taking"....lol...so they won't look at me like I'm crazy.

Lol, sneaky...

Glad it's been able to help you man. I think it's helping me though I haven't done it long enough to know concretely.

I been talking to myself out loud to let my thoughts out and I want to stop because I think people think I'm crazy. What do you suggest I do (because I know people hear me do it sometimes)?

I know you asked AtTheGates, but you could try writing down your thoughts in a journal. Apologies if this sounds obvious.

if people have already heard you do it then you could just use your phone or a DSLR to record yourself talking about current events or something like that and when people see you doing it they'll understand that you arent "crazy", you''re just getting your thoughts out.

Thank you. I guess I could try that when I'm home, but what about when I'm not home?

Thank you. What is a dslr? I think they will still think I'm crazy unless I say I'm talking on the phone when at home. Unfortunately I do it sometimes in public.

The only situation I can think of where it's sort of appropriate is when you're shopping and you're trying to remember what you have to buy while sort of whispering to yourself.

I don't really know what kind of advice I can give except acknowledge when it's happening and simply stop.

Thanks. I'll try but it is going to be hard.

It's not that hard if you think about it. Just notice when you're talking out loud and simply activate your inner voice instead.

For me it's hard because I have been doing it for so long. But I will try your method.
